My work plate is empty, so I dug through my vintage body stash and found a Billy Watson Cucaracha.

A rough Parts Gathering phase has begun:

Motor: JK Hawk Retro

Bracket: BWA/Professor Motor

Rears: 3/32 unflanged rims with vintage orange donuts

Fronts: 1/16 O-Rings

Tongue: Dynamic

Chassis: ISO with tilting body mounts

I had some La Cucarachas get loose in the track, and now they are breeding. Bring your dog, JoJo up and see if he can sniff them out.

Billy, your Cuc bodies are popular but JoJo only kills rats :laugh2:

The fresh orange donuts I have always perform well on jaildoor chassis cars - so they got the nod. Found some inserts that may work well.

Champion speed ring oilites soldered home on the bracket

My goal of making both bracket and motor sit level at ground zero with .032 clearance is mathematically impossible.

A Parma 26 mikes at .647", which "drives" the entire situation.

So, here's my plan:

-Parma 26T (dyed black) sleeved to 3/32 with a hollow set screw (makes it balance)

-ARP 9T angled steel pinion (not because it's needed for hypoid - because of the small crown OD)

-Orange donuts at about .750"

-Clearance .062" rear, angled to .032 front

-Chassis will be an ISO (because all Cucs are ISO lol) with tilting rod body mount outriggers

-I reserve the right to possibly use Swiss plated wire here and there, but it will be almost all brass rod

Photo is rough trim of the wheels to 13/16" OD, PCH axle trimmed to correct length to make it 3.00" wide.

Note to potential buyers - unlike my previous car which was full of high dollar rare collectible parts, this car is going to be very affordable :sun_bespectacled:

Back to the "budget" Cuc - I guess you could call me the "Cucaracha Whisperer" :music:

Getting all jiggyed up with a steel tongue/brass chunk sandwich, tilted up slightly for .032/.063 slope

Thanks Geary, I'm sure you will see a lot of endbelldrive, dc-65x, and Jairus here.

ISO's always seem to handle like a dream when done right.

Some rear end bracing

Hey Mr. Pablo,

Did you think that heavy, cast motor bracket needed that added bracing ??? It looked like a pretty substantial bracket right out of the box to me?? (Just asking cause I have the SAME one I am using on my "thingie" build I am doing... ;) )

Thanks for asking. My answer is, if it was an original BWA bracket, no. But it's not, it's a copy of the BWA and not near as strong. The extra bracing probably isn't necessary, but, I'm an "overbuilder". Also, it's almost all weight down low, so there is no penalty. The "U" brace is .055 and the "L" braces are .047.

Another factor is, the use of oilites instead of racing bushings allows a slight amount of flex without binding the axle. If I was using Slick 7 bushings, I'd say "yes", it needs the braces.

From the main rails, four .063 tubing pieces, then a set of brass rod rails, and ISO tube at the rear

Mike, thanks for asking that question. You saved me from asking it. I hadn't heard that the BWA brackets were machined out of better brass billet than the PMs.

Beginnings of the outer section are cross-connected up front with Swiss plated .047 wire.

Thanks Martin. Hinge wires are Swiss plated .063, side to side slop keepers are custom cut 3/32 tube pieces, rear cross connector is tinned .038 wire. Spacing is 15 thou total (7.5 thou/side)

Pablo, where'd the .038 wire come from? Is it metric?

Cockroach Facts
  • Cockroaches have been around since the time of dinosaurs
  • A cockroach can live almost a month without food
  • A cockroach can live about two weeks without water
  • Some female cockroaches only mate once and stay pregnant for life
  • A cockroach can live for up to one week without its head
  • Cockroaches can hold their breath for up to 40 minutes
  • Cockroaches can run up to 3 miles an hour

Cockroaches can cause allergies, trigger asthma attacks, and spread 33 different kinds of bacteria

cockroach.jpg

An original Cox La Cucaracha:

-handles like a tilting pile

-fails constantly due to flimsy chassis, binding axles, overheated motors, stripped gears

-requires constant fiddling

-spends more time upside down at high speeds than in the slot

-is a constant annoyance to it's owner

IMG_5022.JPG

My new, improved version, once finished:

-never needs food or water

-never mates

-doesn't require air

-runs like a banshee

-is a pleasure to drive

Mike, are you saying your Ex GF had cockroaches?  :laugh2:  The biggest roaches I've seen were in Bermuda.

Taken in perspective, at the time of the Cox La Cucaracha introduction at my local track (212 foot Engleman) the fast setup was a 36d sidewinder with 1¼ inch tires.

It was a revelation that the fastest car on the track wasn’t the fastest on the straight. If I only knew then what I’ve learned now.

Your car is beautiful and if it was in my case back then I would have been king of the track.

Thanks guys. Think of all the motor combinations possible with a simple $14 screw-in FK motor:

Hawk Retro

MiniBrute

PS 4000 series

Hawk 7

Phoenix

Hawk 25

TSR

etc. etc.

Down in Australia they have flying cockroaches. They target you and do strafing runs :o

Chassis looking good as usual.  These roaches do seem to multiply even though they spend most of the time inside a pitbox lol!  I started out with one, now there are six that I know of !  Build on Mr. Pablo!

Will do :D I changed my mind on front wheels - 5/8" OD instead of 1/2".

They will ride on a one-piece Swiss .063 wire axle, secured to the outriggers via .047 wire uprights.

Here's something I never though of before, for all you high speed and good handling crazed morons:

if you buy Oring wheels with the rings, peel them off and inspect. Mine were crusty and out of true

IMG_1614.JPG

Opened up my vintage front wheel drawer of horrors, and found the solution
