It was a long and winding road…

It was a grueling test of will Saturday March 9, for the Third Annual Scrambler event, held for the first time at ONO Raceway in London, Ontario, on their 140-foot, eight-lane King track.

26 racers were on hand, the largest field to date, to compete for Scrambler glory.

Competitors from the Niagara Region, London, the GTA and from Pennsylvania, veteran racer Dan Ebert joined the fray – the first American racer to compete at a Scrambler event.

With so many racers in attendance, it proved to be a long day, with three classes running. Thankfully, we had former ONO Raceway veteran racer Nate Talaskavich on hand as the race director, who kept the show moving despite a few hiccups along the way.

Dennis Dominey and Scott Bogart capably handled the tech inspection and we got underway a little after 11 am with the first class – GT1.

This class was 26 four-minute heats and at the end of the race, veteran Niagara Falls, Ontario racer and Inaugural Scrambler champion, Rodger Niznik, won with 396 laps. It was a solid win and a good start to his quest for a second overall Scrambler championship. Dan Ebert finished second on 388 laps. Track owner, John Schwartz, rounds out the podium, just two laps out of second place with 386 laps. John Waller, making a rare start with a scale car, was a lap behind on 385 laps. Dennis Dominey finished in fifth place on 379 laps.

This was a grinding opening race with four-minute heats, two-minute lane rotations and a large field. So, we made the decision to reduce the heat races for the GTP class to three minutes and the lane rotation to 1:30 from 2:00, so we could finish the event before Sunday.

After GT1 was complete, we enjoyed a great BBQ of tasty home-made burgers and veggies prepared by John’s wife, Brenda, and expertly grilled by club members. Many thanks to Brenda for her contribution.

Now onto the local option class - London GTP. 16D motors, stamped steel chassis with high down force bodies. These things fly!

John Waller, from Mt. Albert Ontario has not raced scale cars in a number of years and this was his first Scrambler event. He was on a rocket this day and won handily on 312 laps over hard charging Dennis Dominey from St. Catharines on 309 laps. Rodger Niznik continued his good run, finishing third on 305 laps. Matt Aitken 299 and Dan Ebert trailed on 294.

As a result of his win in GT1 and third place finish in the GTP class, Rodger Niznik claims his second Overall Scrambler Championship, congratulations to Rodger.

The Niagara Posse was making up for the trouncing they received last year at the second Scrambler event when the GTA contingent ruled, but they were not finished yet.

Time was marching on, really marching on. We had a scoring snafu that was not recognized until five of the GTP heats had been completed which necessitated a complete restart of the GTP race, so a long day got even longer.

The GP 12 open class was up next as the closing act to the event. These were the fastest cars of the day and one of the most anticipated races. However, as race day went longer than anticipated, only 13 participants registered for this class.

I broke a motor in GT1 and just could not get going well in GTP. I knew I had a decent car for this class, not the fastest but it was very drivable. I had my rear wing fixed in place and my car was planted. I also had to sacrifice straight line speed due to the drag of the fixed wing, however, and focussed on staying on, making laps and to try and avoid the heavy crashes this class can dish out. I was on for the first four lanes and thought I might have a shot at this as I went onto my sit out in the lead. But then Dennis Dominey and Scott Bogart began their stints and it became quickly evident that my vision of a win would be derailed. Dennis was setting a ridiculous pace and Scott was just a tick behind, both in a race of raw speed.

Scott had a terrible event so far with motor failures in GT1 and GTP and this race was the final disappointment when his car had the body ripped off it in a wicked crash ending his chances.

After that, the rest of the field were moving chicanes as Dennis went uncontested, laying down 380 laps to win by 43 laps! He could have sat out a lane, with a 47.8 lap average and still won the race – a beat-down if ever there was one.

I managed to claim second place on 337 laps and Dan Ebert added another solid finish to his Scrambler debut with 333 laps in third. Wing car debutante and fellow GTA racer, Charles Goertz, finished an impressive fourth place. Evan Curtis, another newbie and one of the quickest corner marshals ever ran fifth.

With the GP 12 race done, the third edition of the Scrambler was complete – and it was still Saturday. 😊

Regrettably, the awards presentation was dampened by the fact the awards were still at Canada Customs by event time and finally arrived March 13.

Unfortunately, the time for presenting awards and celebrating the champions was cut short as a result of the race day dragging on longer than anticipated as overtired racers had to leave. Hopefully more time next year to celebrate the racers and their efforts.

Dennis Dominey, by his fifth-place finish in GT1 was the winner of a beautiful body pinning fixture from Lateral-G products and Mark Horne. Check them out HERESteve Breau from London won a brand-new chassis donated by Mossetti Racing products.

Special thanks go out to John Schwartz and his wife Brenda for hosting and the crew from ONO Raceway for all their work preparing for the event.
Many thanks to Dennis Dominey and Scott Bogart for providing technical guidance, moral support, and performing the tech inspections.
Nate Talaskavich who was a great race director, and who hung in for the duration of the event, thank you!
Thanks to all the competitors who made the effort to attend the event.

Looking forward to the fourth Scrambler event at ONO Raceway the date to be announced soon.

Thanks,

Terry

Wish I could have been there but work seems to be getting in the way of a lot of things these days.

Hi Nelson:  Perhaps you can plan to attend next years event. There were many people there that had not seen each other in years and people who had never met. They spent as much time catching up with each other as they did racing, it was a great atmosphere.  I definitely tried to cram too much racing into one day though, we'll do better next time.  The other cool thing is we had a lot of guys there, well under 40 - this was very encouraging to see.
