i have 2 pairs of Monogram Indy Lotus set cars, but with different motors. One motor is a chromed can, red endbell; other is a gray painted can, white endbell. Is either one rarer, or better than the other? thanks

Just sounds like somebody switched motors, nothing rare. Gray motor is not original.

If I'm not mistaken, the early cars had the grey motors, and later got the chrome one.

thanks guys. Just trying to make the best pair of cars to keep, and the other two go into a set that I will sell.

Curious, MY plastic framed 1/32 scale set cars have the monogram RED can. Crome are usually Cox and Gray are Revell coloured cans.
I will ask Ed Sexton from Monogram if he remembers if they used different cans over time. He races with us now and then with The Great Lakes 1/32 home track club.

Dark gray with white endbell is a variation. I have two pairs of Lotus 38 set cars and all have the chrome can red endbell combo. A picture would confirm...

Mine look same as the above pic, chrome can, red endbell. Just had one in hand putting on a new windshield. Thanks, Brad!

Looks like a 1/24 scale 16D?

i took another look at my 4 cars and i have 2 different chassis and 3 different motors:
notice 2 chassis numbers: 43 and 46, and the added bracket on the back of the #46 chassis. All 3 different colored cans are identical except for the colors, and then either a white or red endbell. Which motors should I keep?

All rtr chassis.. Looks like a Monogram motor, Revell motor and Rannalli motor. The bracket on back the frame was the chassis from the Mclaren/Chaparral set cars. It fit into a notch in the body.
Why switch motors, just run what is there. The wrong motors don't necessarily hurt the value of these cars. Doesn't make much difference in the long run. Set them up to run the way they are.

Good call on the Mclaren/Chaparral set and RTR car chassis Matt (rear chassis tab fits into notch in body mount slot), but if that motor is darker than what shows on my screen then I call good Monogram. If more light gray then Revell, if darker, almost like the dark gray metallic of Garvic/BZ/Champion 36Ds then Monogram. Got examples...
