Night of the Jackals – Can-Am on the King – 4/2/19

Can-Am on the Sovereign was on the schedule but only seven racers attended this week’s race which is a couple shy of being able to adequately marshal the “Purple Mile”. Thus, similar to the last race scheduled on the Sovereign, we moved over to the King to run with four racers on the track and three marshals.

Can-Am Cars in Tech:

John Weaver had the fast car in practice and easily took the early lead. Dave Panich and Bob “Woody” Hazelwood spent much of the evening running side-by-side but Woody’s motor seemed to slow as it built temperature while Dave’s appeared to gain speed giving him a slight advantage at the end of each heat. Not far behind, Richard Payne and Dan Savage were running close together while Tom Smith and Wayne Secore gave chase.

About midway through the last heat on the outside lanes Weaver’s motor threw a winding and his car slowed considerably. This allowed Dave to match his lap total of 153 at the midpoint of the race. Woody was trailing them by 5 laps with Richard another two laps off the pace in the battle for the final step on the podium.

After a brief intermission for a motor swap (with small fields we tend to bend the rules to keep racers on the track) Weaver was back up to speed and able to reclaim the lead, ultimately taking the win by 6. Dave's 8-lap margin over Woody put him solidly in 2nd place while Woody held a comfortable 7-lap margin on Richard to take 3rd. Dominator chassis dominated the night as the 1st and 3rd place cars were “Jackal Pros” while the 2nd place car was a plain ol’ “Jackal”.

Weaver’s fast lap on white held up for the entire race allowing him to claim best-lap honors while times for the rest of the field descended correspondingly with their finishing positions. White and Blue were the fast lanes tonight with all but one racer posting their fastest times on one of these two lanes.

Final Standings, laps completed, fast-lap time and lane:

  1. John Weaver            312/9      4.382      WT
  2. Dave Panich             306/7      4.554      BL
