Hey folks,

Charlie from the San Diego track here (the internet-stuff guy and helping-hand). When it comes to Slotblog I'm more of a lurker than a poster, but I wanted to post an update on the track for anyone who had planned to visit.

It has been an absolute blast racing with everyone who came out to the track over the past year, but as of April ,t 2019, Speed and Sport Raceway is closed indefinitely. Thanks to everyone who supported the track, especially to Chris McKee. He was a great ambassador for the hobby and made the San Diego track possible.

In the past few days we've learned that what was collected to start year two cannot be accounted for and that the flat track is being moved. If it is feasible to start over again with just the King track or if it relocates I'll make sure to drop back by with another update.

Until then, thanks to everyone who has supported us, and for the fun times and great racing.

Charlie,

Thanks for letting everyone know.

I've pulled the Raceway List entry for Speed and Sport.

It's the San Diego curse. Started in the '60s and continues today.

La Mesa on Baltimore, during the Pittman and Wilson's era; it closed.

YMCA downtown SD, closed.

Le Mans on Amaya Dr. closed.

Spring Valley, closed.

El Cajon, closed.

Lakeside, closed.

Clairmont, closed.

Escondido, closed.

Chula Vista, closed.

North County (Gary Cleverly, RIP) closed.

Thanks to the OP of this thread for at least giving a notification, and a "goodbye, thanks for supporting us."  :good:

Back in the old days we never even got that.

Sorry to hear this. That means 'The Beast' flat track will be on the move again.

Hopefully it will be turning up somewhere. The Beast track, was just starting to dial the track in. Hell all the guys were running real close on that track. Was only 38 miles from my house.

Hard to keep a track here in San Diego with costs for buildings. We need all the racers in SD to come out and save some of these places once they open. I know there are a lot of slot car guys in San Diego. Don't know all the history here or bad feelings between racers in San Diego, just need to move on and show support. Would of like to have met Chris that opened the Speed and Sport track. I heard he was a hell of nice person and cared a lot about slot car racing (RIP). Just want to say thanks, Chris.

Keep in touch racers.

Wow, that 38 miles must have been a real chore for you.

Once a month, I go to Prattville, Alabama, to race. It's 4.5 hours drive each way.

At least I know the place will be open when I get there.   :)

Not sure what you meant, Pablo. Chris passed before the track opened and was the main provider for the track. A couple other friends tried to keep it open, as well as the racers that showed up. I guess the funds ran out. I will leave it at that.

Pablo,

Tim mentions the track was only 38 miles from his house. Pretty close really. Doesn't sound like it was a "chore" for him to race there.

Guys,

Pablo is just jealous because the closest track to him is hours and hours away... He'd love to have a raceway so close.
