I say he was Larry Bird before there was a Larry Bird, or Larry Bird was another John Havlicek. I remember watching him when he was 39/40 and still the best player on the floor.

John Havlicek played on some great teams, both in college & in the pros.

Guys, I posted this out of respect to one of the greatest basketball player I'd ever seen. If our John Havlicek (a great in many of our opinion) had passed we would have lost a friend and a true craftsman. That's why I said the "Other" John Havlicek. Modern basketball can't compare to watching Hondo, Larry Bird and Kevin McHale play.

Back when I actually watched pro basketball, the Lakers and Celtics put on outstanding playoffs for quite a few years. That was probably the last pro basketball I watched.
The first pro I watched was the Knicks with Frazier, Monroe, Bradley, Debuscher and Reed and the Celtics beat them pretty regular with JH leading the way.

You are correct, but what are they done since? When the NBA had six teams, there used to be a few double-headers with 2 of 3 visiting teams playing each other, then the 3rd playing the home team. I went to one where the Cincinnati Royals played the Philadelphia Warriors, then the Knicks played the Celtics, both in the old Boston Gardens. I was about 10 or 12 at the time.

Bill Russell was quoted as saying John Havlicek was the best all-around player he ever saw - and that's from a guy who was probably the greatest player ever and won something like 10 championships...

I remember watching the Celtics playing the Knicks on April 22nd 1973 as John was playing and he and the guys were losing to NY. I heard a car pull up and my friend Sue got out crying, as I was the Big Brother to a group of girls that used to hang out at G&L Raceway I figured her boyfriend needed his a-- kicked. She broke the news that my fiance had drowned at Rocky Point, I broke out a couple of cold ones and we drank them as the Celtics lost. Two very bad things happened that weekend, I remember it all like it was ten minutes ago. After that I never missed a Havlicek game and never failed to pay my respects, now added John to my list of people to pray for.
