Retro Stock Cars on the Figure 8 – 5/21
This week seven racers brought their retro Stock Cars to run on the Figure 8. By my reckoning it has been over two years since the MVH Tuesday night retro series has run stockers on the blue track. Even though racing was in the 4/4 format with two marshals and one person to run the computer track calls were minimal.
Stock Cars in Tech:
In spite of a rough first heat, Bob “Woody” Hazelwood was in a tie for 2nd place with Ray Lee by the move to the inside lanes with 188 laps each while Dave Panich enjoyed a 5-lap lead. Richard Payne was trailing the tie by only one lap while two laps back Ernie Lachance was hanging in there. Dan Savage and Rich Girvin closed out the field.
Woody’s chance to grab the lead appeared early in the second half of the race as he started to pull away from Ray and Dave struggled on both purple and black. Woody had the best second half in the field, adding 9 laps to his first half total but was unable to close the gap as Dave recovered in his final two heats to take the win. The podium was evenly spaced with 4 laps separating Dave in 1st from Woody in 2nd from Ray in 3rd. The rest of the field finished in the same order as at the half, and was similarly spaced out for a fairly close race--considering the average lap time on the Figure 8 for stock cars is around 3.6 seconds.
Dave and Woody tied for fast lap honors with identical 3.507 second laps. Richard P did the “most with the least” as his 6th fastest lap time was good enough for a solid 4th place finish while Ernie was unable to improve on his first heat time on red.
