There's a simple reason I don't like this style of track. And why I most dislike them for Retro, my preferred class of slot cars.

Simply: they expose my weakness.

That's it. I'm very competitive on almost any other style of track but Gerding Kings are my Achilles heel.

So if you ever hear me complain about a G-King, it's not the track. It's me. Maybe in another five years, I'll finally figure these things out. ‍♂

Chris, I agree with you about the "punch bowl" king tracks. And mainly its my driving style. Slow and easy.  I tend to drive a little conservative which is ok for "driver" tracks because I don't de-slot a lot which keeps me in the hunt for a podium finish. Good post.

It is a matter of turning enough laps, hehe.
Like IMS, when you are not going to lift going thru turn one.

I was testing a b52 in a CA and I ask Alex to drive it to see how fast it would really go. Sure enough he went .15 faster. And he said Duran could maybe be even faster. Duran ran in thru the bank but did not make it thru the Deadman, not even making a full lap, and he said it is not going to go any faster. Duran just know what a CA has to do to run a certain lap time and when a car isn't able to do that its not going to be able to run that time.

I had a HO raceway a long time ago and most of the day no one would show up so I just ran laps trying different set ups and driving techniques. After all that running you just know if a car is fast or not, like Duran I could tell in one lap if a HO car was fast or not. Not comparing my skills to Duran in any way. Lol. But if you run laps with a properly setup car you will get a feeling of what a car needs to do to be quick

and here I thought the fact that I can barely bend over and reach black on the straightaway was the problem.... (My Gerding local track is PJ Raceway - and with a bad back, marshalling is bad, and reaching the low lanes is worse).

Mostly just play with lots of cars.
Able to maintain slot cars with a single bound.
Faster than a speeding womp.
More powerful than a 36D

Same here. Especially marshalling. Punch bowls are not old fart friendly.

And I don't like losing site of my car because of the high banking. I have enough trouble driving without dealing with that.

That's why they call it Punch Bowls, you don't come off.

Never felt they did any good for the hobby .Just made one spend mega $$$$$$$$$ to try to keep up .

They sure haven't help to grow or keep people in the hobby . But then what has ?

Im an NERR regular and was in nearly every A-Main last season, except for F1 events on M-villes king. Larry Labounty is one of NERR board members... So some of us do whine about G-kings 😉

But again, my whining is because this style of track is like kryptonite to me.

Flat tracks "ROCK"  :good:  They separate the drivers from the builders.

I should have been more specific about Modelville racers. I should have said their Tuesday night drivers who have been racing retro cars weekly for over 5 or 6 years. That would eliminate series drivers like both you & Larry. Bottom line, if you don't like the track stay off it. :)

Bill- I guess you didnt notice my original point in starting the thread... 🤔. Its my weakness. So as a racer, instead of staying off g-kings Ill instead keep practicing on them until I get to where I need to be.

Hey, Chris.
At least you actually race and you're not a keyboard racer.😉

Thanks Danny. Gary Clinton gets pi$$ed at me for how much I stink on these style tracks, even with a good car. I just dont brake late enough. But Im getting better.

Had hoped youd be at Palooza this year.

One thing that helps me is practicing with a middle tier car at first. I go out and practice how hard I can hit turns. Get a feel for the punch style. If you end up destroying the car at least it isn't a top tier car.

I definitely want to make one. Biscuit and I are game planning on making one next year. If so I'll have to go early. I'll need a lot of punch bowl style practice.

The last commercial raceway around here & in the state closed August 2010. It's kind of tough racing without a track.  :laugh2:  My roadtrips to tracks in CT & NY ended in the late 70's.

Whatever Bill. Modelville is about an hour ride from where NFS was located. If thats too far from you to enjoy slot cars, then Im sorry.
