How does the Cox Chaparral 2E wing actuator work?

I have reviewed Jean-Michel's excellent restoration pages with his actuator modifications, but I don't understand how the rotating wing functions.

Are you talking about the Iso-fuIcrum 2E, or the mag 2E?

Mag 2E, thanks.

It seems that it's just a matter of airflow and momentum. My guess...when accelerating, the wing moves up following the airflow, and when braking, the wing moves down with momentum.

Mag 2e, thanks.

Sorry, can't help much there. I don't have one of those... yet.

Do you have the Iso-fulcrum version? If so, how does that versioin work?

The wing operating mechanism is attached to the motor. When you accelerate, the motor torque causes the motor to rotate to the left, flattening the wing.

IMG_20190616_162316.jpg

When decelerating, the motor rotates clockwise, to the right, raising the wing angle.

Hope that helps.

The mag version works similarly...

Thanks, and great explanation of the Iso-fulcrum version. It seems that the mag version, being a sidewinder, works the same but with forward and back rotation.

Yes, on the mag car, a similar system is used. I don't have one, so I'm not sure exactly what is involved. One day I hope to acquire one, so I'll know firsthand.

I don't have an original. I picked up a very nice body reproduction from the bay, and I have a restored 2D chassis, but because the motor is different from the 2E it doesn't rotate. I have the NASCAR motor used in the 2E, but I now need to find the rare associated mounting braket.

You can see in the instructions that there is a little white clip that fastens onto the 36D NASCAR motor by locking onto the cooling hole. The wing wire is straight and as the motor pivots front to back it makes the wing move. I've made repros of both.

That's for the iso version which goes on the gear side of the motor. The mag version piece clips on to the top of the can. I'm in the process of 3D-printing an alternate along with the NASCAR motor mounting bracket. Photos to follow.

If somebody doesn't post a copy of the mag assembly, I will do so later. The lever snaps into the top cooling hole of the motor int he mag car. It has a small extension toward the back side of the can and the operating wire goes thru the end of this extension.

Motor and chassis are the same as the 2D chassis, but the motor carrier has a big enough hole to allow the motor to rock back and forth by engine torque.

Last week an auction went thru eBay for $153. It had a painted Cuc, a bare Cheetaracha body, and the chassis. A mag frame 2E body painted black with no windshield but did have side scoops. In the loose junk was the motor carrrier for the mag 2E. It was a buy at that price and the buyer now has it parted out on eBay and the motor carrier is listed as a single item. I think he calls it a 2D bracket; he is not aware what he actually bought.

You can glue a piece of plastic to the top of the motor to create the lever, or solder a piece of brass to the can.

Here is the motor carrier listed on eBay. Probably posting it here just raised the bids 30-40%.

Matt, thanks for posting that info (I also have those JPGs also in my library). I'm working on the lever design and the motor mounting bracket (carrier) now and will 3D-print it.

I did a quick search on eBay for the original metal bracket cut did not see it. Do you have the auction number?

Matt, I just found the auction with three bids on it, and it is a bit bent. I'll be watching it.

Try this, Bill.

ebay.com/itm/153529253486

Let us know how you do making the carriers. At one time  thought about trying to make one in resin. It wouldn't be strong enough to actually race, but  could go on a display car. The right process makes resin copies possible of a lot of parts. A casting that thin is tricky, but I bet it could be done.

Nice job.    I had thought of copying them for several years but I didn't one, so, I kind of forgot about it until you started this thread.    I took apart an original a couple nites ago and made some in resin.     Looks like you made a satisfactory piece.  Here is what I made.
