I started a new project while accumulating more parts for other projects. I'd had the Professor Motor bodies and the recommended wheels for awhile, so I ordered the chassis to go with it. The chassis is set up with both 36D and 26D mounting. I grabbed a Classic 26D for mock up.

Here is my Chaparral 2J project car I built sometime back, I used a Vac body and original Cox chassis . Runs pretty good around the track.

Nice Don.    IIRC White Point actually had a 1/24 kit of the 2J available 15-20 years ago.   Anybody remember it, or White Point?

Yup.  I still see them for sale at Slotmania in Stuttgart, at least I did last year.

Well, plan "A" didn't work out well. When the rear tire/wheel/axle assembly mocked up, there is no room for a spur gear! I tried almost every type of gear I have, and nothing works yet.  :dash2:

You dont think it might work out with an inset pinion gear like used on an old Classic chassis??? (Like my Manta Ray uses???)

Pinion is not the issue. The pinion is just a mock up. Not spaced right.

No room for the spur gear with the chosen wheel combination. The issue is the wheel combination doesn't leave room for the spur to fit, and clear the body. The boss on the rim is too long. I could fix it, but I don't have the equipment to do it.

I've got the same PM 2J body and chassis, and I mocked it up using Cox taper axle on the rear, wheels and spur that fit in OK.

Seeing as the body covers the rear wheels, it doesn't really matter what Cox wheels to use, but I'm going to use the Cox Chaparral ones on mine.

Just a thought.

That is plan 2.2. Plan 2.1 will attempt to do something else.

Only thing that comes to mind right now is a threaded axle with a thin threaded spur and flat spots ground for the set-screw wheels.

That's pretty close to what I am planning on Plan 2.1, but not exactly.

I scored these on ePay. I think this might work.

Well, I think I finally found a solution to the rear axle issue. With the Dynamic wheels, and a Cox narrow spur gear, I can now get the body on the chassis. A little bit more clearance is needed on the gear side. I think by flipping the spur gear around, and making a new gear side spacer, I should have the clearance needed.

Yup, those Dynamic Chaparral wheels are sweet!  Their T70 wheels are nice as well, but the Russkit T70s are the best ever!

Hi, I have the same problem with Tamiya repro chassis; please could you add a picture with your axle / gear/ spacers / wheels disassembled?

Thanks

P.

Flipping the Cox narrow spur gear around gave me the needed clearance to get everything under the body. I used a .118 inch aluminum tubing spacer on the left side, and need about a .020 inch spacer between the axle bushing and the nut for the gear and it will be perfect.
