LapMaster comes up and only goes to emulation mode, won't energize track. Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks.

Is the red led flashing in the LapMaster box?

Have you tried using the search function in the setup window to select the correct COM port?

As for contacting Carsten, when I send an email, I get a reply within hours.

Are you using a direct serial port connection or a USB to serial adapter? If USB I would reinstall the driver for the adapter.

I am very sorry that you have a bad experience!

However from my side of the story, I have not received any email from you recently.
I rechecked my mail service including the spam folder, and I cannot see that I have missed any service requests.
As I live in Europe, normal turnaround time might be abouth 24 hours due to the time difference.

The issue:
When LapMaster goes into emulation mode on startup, it is because it cannot see any LapMaster system at the other end of the serial cable.
It might takes a little bid of work to find the fault.
1) As suggested the LapMaster hardware must be up and running hense the blinking red LED on the master board.
- You have acknowledged that, so no problem here.
2) The LapMaster program must be setup to communicate on the COM port that Windows has assigned to the it.
LapMaster remembers the last port used, and this usual is the one to use.
If you attach the serial-to-USB converter to a different USB port on the computer, Windows will assign a different COM port no.
Normally doing a new search from within the LapMaster program setup menu, will find the new port for you.
- You have reported that the search was in vain, so we will have to continue the debug.

3) In Windows, start the "Device Manager". (Click on the Windows icon in the lower left corner, type "Device Manager", and Windows find the program to start for you.
In the device manager fold out "Ports (COM&LPT)"
In this section you should see the FTDI USB adapter. You can see what COM port Windows has assigned, or if there is a problem with the driver.
If the COM port is COM10 or more, we need to reset the Windows COM port system. Let me know if that is the case. This Windows COM port reset requires a good deal of explanation.

4) If  the COM port looks good from the Windows side, then we possibly have a cable connection problem.
Make sure the serial cable is firmly attached to the LapMaster box.
If possible try another serial cable or maybe just disconnect and reconnect the cable.
There has been instances of the serial plug not making proper contact with the board.
You might also try a different computer (i.e. laptop) just to figure out where the fault is.

I am sorry, but modern computers are complicated.

Best regards,

Carsten Groennemann.

Thank you for the reply.

The email was sent via Mark's Model World so my name was not on it. We are at trying a new cable, tried the laptop and got the same response. Waiting for the new cable; had to order it as no one local stocks one long enough. If the cable doesn't cure the problem could the power relay at the track cause the same response?

Thanks.

I find I need to unplug and repower the control system on a regular basis or it loses connection with the computer.

From previous emails, it appears this system was build in 2014.

I really don't see any recent communications. But, of course, if the mail comes from other interested parties. I cannot relate it.

Anyway, if changing the cable doesn't solve the problem, please send me an email, including your shipping address. We can then work out an exchange of the unit.

And by the way. If you are using a long cable, make sure it is the serial cable that is long, not the USB.
USB should not go beyond 2 meters (6 feet) in length, and you should refrain from using any USB hubs. Please plug the serial-to-USB adapter straight into the computer USB port.

The serial connection on the other hand can be as long as 50 meters (150 feet) without any problem.

25 foot long serial cable in use, plugged straight into the computer.

Thanks.

Carsten is the man. I'm thinking about selling my four lane track that has a LapMaster on it and building a six lane track. It will have a LapMaster on it too.

I completely disconnect the computer and all scoring from any power source when not in use. I club member lost some electronics due to a storm with everything still plugged in.

Not sure if this would be applicable for your issue with the box. Just throwing it on the table for something to chew on.
