The new mid-engine Corvette has been teased so long, the actual announcement seems almost anticlimactic.

IMO, it looks pretty sharp, but is it much different than say an Acura NSX.

But, with all that said, the starting under $60K claim, is real impressive, to me.

Especially if that gets you the sub 3 second, 0-60 time.(edit-looks like that's with an optional package, but still impressive)

Why couldn't they have made it... sleek and handsome.
It looks like a sci-fi spaceship that will appear very dated in 10 years.

I agree.

Something a bit more retro / classic.

It's also disappointing that there won't be a stick.

It is somewhat impressive that the weight is only something like 3360 lbs.

In this day and age, that's not awful, especially since it has a fairly big V8.

The car to wait for will be the Gordon Murray sports car.

It's supposed to be both real light, and have a stick.

Unfortunately, it probably will never make it across the pond, along with being a lot more expensive.

I'd be surprised if you could buy one under $100,000. The Viper retailed for $65,000 when it first came out and the dealers were getting a $100,000 for them. Some dealers are getting over $20,000 over list price for a Jeep Gladiator pickup truck.

Raisin, that's the picture I saw of it yesterday and the Ford GT was the first thing I thought of. But the Ford GT I think is about $450,000.

GM is a minimum 10 years late with the mid-engine Corvette. The last mid-engine (and the only one I can think GM ever  put into production) car didn't end well. Maybe there's a scared mid-level manager in GM that had/has nightmares of the previous vehicle and he's finally gone.

The demographic for the present-day Corvettes is dying off and while the styling isn't all the attractive to *US* it is more inline with the generation raised on Transformers movies and the Fast & Furious franchise. Buyers of 'Vettes who related to the 50s & 60s are going away. It's an irreversible trend. That's what GM is responding to.

Pappy,

Of course, dealers will be soaking people, at first.

But eventually it will die down.

When they first came out, there was Focus RS, on the local dealers lot, for a tick under $50K.

Not anymore.

When I look at it I do not see Ford GT. The GT is much cleaner than this. Phil Is correct in that this is not styled for my generation but for the video game people. I will say it looks better than the current Corvette. That thing has so many fake angles and crap on it it is ridiculous.

That said I wish them great success with it.

It was actually inspired off of a Ferrari 458. They will easily go for over $10k over sticker for awhile I believe. That $60k tease is cute, but I bet the one you want will be $80K+ all day long.

I thought I read somewhere that the first cars won't have the new V8, since they were claiming that the engine was "un-tunable".

$80k, Oh, you mean the one with wheels, tires, spark plugs and seats?  Yeah, you wouldn't get those things on the $60k version.  :D

You'll be able to buy one in 2 years, for $45k, in any color you want, that some 70 year old guy drove twice a month. LOL

I know a guy who does exactly that. He'll buy one that's a cherry, drive it for 6 month's and then sell it for a profit.

The Corvette is rated the second worst car to be in in an accident. The Mitsubishi Mirage is the worst.

This is the Greatest Corvette imaginable. It is just out of this world awesome.  Everyone around the world is going to want one and it will be the first american sports car they ever wanted.  Its a good thing Chevy did not build one until now because the whole art of mid engined design has recently gotten so much better . It was worth the wait and in my opinion the car could not have been nicer. Corvette enthusiasts everywhere are proud of GM for having the balls to build it.

my 2cents- I always thought it interesting that modern corvettes have the engine in front and transmission in the rear for balance. two friends of mine have them.  just a flush-o-matic though? that goes against the grain.

guess with this one they were trying to reduce the polar moment of inertia, likely for racing.

it even looks as though you could use the rear intakes as a step to get up and wash the roof!  lol

What Howie said times two. It was built by GM to CRUSH the Ford GT at a reasonable price. The same reason that they now have a Camaro LT-1 priced in the same range as a Mustang GT. I can't wait until they start putting the DOHC V-8 in them, then the twin turbo DOHC V-8,and last but not least the twin turbo V-8 / Electric version. I also can't wait for the DOHC V-8 to make it's way into the Camaro.

I just hope they do it in my life time. LOL

By the way the base price of the 2019 Ford GT is just shy of five hundred K.

Regards,

Greg VanPeenen

Pappy,

If I want to I will.

There is nothing stopping me from paying cash for one or maybe a Vette for the weekends and a Camaro for a daily drive. I pay more then the base C8 Corvette for the Trucks I drive.

I get a new one of those whenever they get twenty K miles on them.

Regards,

Greg VanPeenen.

My Mini Cooper John Cooper Works was almost 50 k and it will outrun most of the cars on the road. Not the ultra cars but I always find my self 10 to 20 miles per hour over the speed limit very quickly.

I like the new look over a Huracan but maybe not as elegant as some Ferrari's. If you want an odd looking car see the new Supra. Saw it in person at a Barrett-Jackson event and it was not pleasant.

Very impressive car. I would definitely be interested in a 3 year old example say around 2023. I wonder what the trunks look like. Hopefully GM is using a modern set of golf clubs when they claim to be able to put a set of clubs in each trunk. They claimed you could get 2 sets of clubs in the Fiero trunk. The only way to do that is to take the clubs out and have collapsing golf bags.
