Does anybody know if it is still around? It has to be the wintergreen scent.

Thanks.

I remember a distinct aroma at the local track back in the late sixties, wonder if it wasn’t wintergreen, never used the stuff but I remember the smell.

Yes, oil of wintergreen.

The fumes were so strong, guys would put a bottle of it, from the drug store, in their box, and if didn't have a super tight seal, when they went to slot race a few days, or a week later, their butyrate body would either be cracked, or it would shatter, first time it anything on the track.

If you can't find the Trinity stuff, just slather your body with max strength Ben Gay, for the smell of the '60s.

While guys like Sano Dave loved the nostalgic smell, of stuff like Zip Grip, it makes my eyes water, I request guys not to use it, and sell them a bottle of Sticky Fingers.

Sticky Fingers was created because of the complaints at indoor R/C races, where the increased volume use of it, with bigger cars, was creating a fume issue.

I think the thing that smells in oil of wintergreen, zip grip, Ben Gay, etc., is the methyl salicylate.

Back when I was young I convinced my mom to buy me some wintergreen oil. When she gave it to me I was p... (upset) it didn't say wintergreen on it. Once opened I was satisfied.

Those side effects are a common sight at most tracks anyways!

When your tire rubber comes off of the rim, going into a turn, and you destroy your car, or someone else's, you better think about thinning it down.

What don't you just keep a tiny bit in a bottle, and dap a bit in your nostrils, before you walk into the raceway.

As mentioned, not everyone loves that smell, especially if it's real strong.

Back in my early days we smoked in the raceway too.

Oil of wintergreen mixed with tobacco smoke was even nastier! I sometimes wonder about the long term health effects from just being present in a raceway. Just lighting up in that atmosphere could have caused a flash fire! I think someone somewhere had a fire from sliming a straightaway with lighter fluid.

As I understand it, methyl salicylate (oil of wintergreen or wintergreen oil), has been linked to migraine headaches in some people. I don't open the Zip Grip when the CEO is in the house. Nope, not even in the basement.

One of the BEST home grown tire conditioners---  Coppertone,  %10 oil of wintergreen-- %10 power steering stop leak.  Mix together and use for tire conditioning. Coat the tires--let it sit for 10 minutes--wipe it off clean and go race!! Works like a charm--been using it for YEARS!!

She's real fine, my 409!!!
