Can-Am on the King – 9/17/19

Once again Can-Am on the Sovereign was on the schedule but only seven racers attended so we moved over to the newly re-sectioned King in order to have adequate marshals at the corners. Richard Payne has divided the track into 31 sections (each section is approximately 5 feet in length) rather than the original 17 sections. This new arrangement should help prevent some of the tie finishes we’ve seen in the past.

Racing was run on the four outside lanes and then the four inside lanes with three marshals, with the lead-on marshal responsible for the track call button.

In the early heats Ray Lee and Dave Panich were running side by side though Ernie Lachance was definitely in the hunt. As the race progressed, “The Ernstigator” found his pace and by the move to the inside lanes had posted the fastest lap of the race on white. Although Dave was in the lead by what the lap counter showed as a lap (151/1), in reality Ernie was just one section behind him (150/31). Ray was within striking distance with 148 laps and enjoyed a 10-lap margin over 4th place Richard P. 10 laps further back Tom was in a battle with Rich G, holding a one lap advantage while Wayne was another 7 laps behind.

Ernie’s car seemed to like the inside lanes as he was turning consistent laps in the 4.5s while Dave fell off the pace after a dismal showing on the blue lane. Ray’s car came alive and for several laps he was able to match Ernie’s pace, though it turned out to be too little too late. It was, however, good enough to get him around Dave and into 2nd place.

At the checkered flag, Ernie took the win with an even 300 laps with Ray two laps back in 2nd and less than a lap ahead of Dave. Once again Richard P cruised to a comfortable finish, this time in 4th, 16 laps off the podium but 19 laps ahead of Tom, his nearest rival. Rich G was close enough to keep Tom honest but had to settle for 6th while Wayne closed out the field.

Ernie had the fastest lap of the evening, a 4.499 on white while Ray’s best time was a 4.625 and Dave had a 4.664.
