I was browsing through old files on my computer –  and I do mean OLD  files, and I found this one:

SOF race.jpg

That's one of the first-ever SERRA races held at Slots of Fun in Abbeville, SC. I'm placing it as circa 2010, possibly (?). Frankly, I want to say it's even earlier than that, but I'm not going out on that limb.

Pictured up front are L-R: Dan Parker, yours truly, and that's Jay Guard's profile. We appear to be marveling at the incredibly unique construction of the chassis that I built for that particular race. When I say "unique," I'm certain that I truly mean "crappy."

Anyway, I wish I could name everyone else in the pic, but I'm not sure. I think that's Speedy in the back, center. Possibly seated at the table against the left wall (with back to the camera) might be Muffin, since he usually occupied that space.

If you can, help me out with the other names. I apologize for not remembering, but that happens with age.

Jim,

I'm pretty sure you're right, that is Speedy.  If Speedy was there Mike Shepard should be around somewhere out of the picture.  Maybe David Liebenthal to his left (?).  I remember the red, white, yellow and blue jacket but can't put a name with it - brain fade.  Agreed, it should be James at the table as that was his and Chris Barnes "reserved" spot.  Oh, the good ole days!  Thanks for the memory...

Don't remember if I was there. Background is Lamar McClellan, Raymond Gonzalez, and it looks like the late Dave Liebenthal.

The IDs seem spot-on to me.

Don and Karen Berni's Slots of Fun raceway in Abbeville is one of my favorite raceways I ever patronized.

I think this is the race and if so, it was 2008!

You're right Mike. It was Gary who made the trip. Finished 12th in Can-Am.

I must have been one of those that Cheater says had to work that day. I almost recall that, in fact. Maybe a hurricane..

Thanks for the corrections and correct identifications. It's a blast to look back, yet sad to note those we've lost since then.

What I meant to indicate is that the original race results from 2008 didn't seem to include my name, as I believe I was one of those absent from that very first race in Abbeville. I do believe the photo is actually from 2010  either the second or third time SoF hosted a SERRA race.

Still, that place was a blast – with one of the best inventories you'd find anywhere!

Jim,

Check the SERRA archives.

The first Abbeville SERRA race was #4 in April, 2008.

2008 is "the past"? - Come on - it's barely last evening.

Yes, "in the past" is 50-60 years ago. :laugh2:  :laugh2:

Jim,

Check the SERRA archives.

The first Abbeville SERRA race was #4 in April, 2008.

I went back and read the whole thing again. Funny, I was there -- but my driving skills were not. I sucked. Still, it was a blast. In fact, I really miss racing at Slots of Fun. It was always a good race venue, as well as a great place to hang out for hours on a Saturday turning in some laps.
