Can anyone tell me if this car is the real thing?

Hey Jeff, I am suspicious because the db bodies I have and have seen have a stripe with fogging and the db is hand painted thicker than the body you show.
Is your db painted on top with a brush with the white dot painted on the inside of the body?

I think the chassis was originally a Phase III or Cobra that was modified on the bat wings. One of the reasons may have been I seem to remember that race chassis widths were expanded with a rules change. The mods may have been to accommodate that evolving widening of the chassis designs. Circa very late '60's.
The body is a Dave Bloom "production" body. Don't let that word-"production"- fool you. They were hard to come by and rare even back in the day.

Martin,
Yes! And it does have fogging, basically down both sides of the cockpit ( hard to see on the dark metallic olive paint).

I agree with Steve, the chassis was either a Cobra, Phaze III, or else made using the brass parts from either. This droparm isn't one piece of sheet brass. Any the Phaze III I've ever seen or had were, so i'm guessing the brass is Cobra's. As I recall, chassis widths increased from 3" to 3 1/16" in 1970 or 71. I still have the red Arco Check tool I filed out for the new width.

I think we can call that "homemade".
I bet when he originally made it, he ate a spur gear, or two, and fixed the problem.
If you run that baby in the rain, at least you don't have to worry about it hydroplaning. LOL

John Cukras made that style droparm for some of his cars.

I kind of think it has been modified over its lifetime. The main rails and drop arm as well as the axle tubes, are nicely done.
The pans, however, leave something to be desired. And there are obvious crash repairs.

I'll ask again.
Was the body portrayed as a Dave Bloom in the ad?
Sorry Mike. I hadn't got to that one yet. Yes, I believe it was mentioned.

at the end of the sixties and early seventies i used to paint bodies trying to "mimic" bloom bodies..the green gold color seems to be correct (one of his)
however as mentioned seems not enough shading of fogging for him (as mentioned) and what always stood out for me was the lettering...since there is no lettering to speak of here except for the db on the dot i will say that the db is suspiciously "fine" for authentic....
not yet mentioned is the trademark db seems to be on a different side, and my memory is not good enough to recall if they were always on the same side

I just looked at my examples and all the pics I have saved and the db is on the left side. Not to say that is always the case.
Jeff, what made you question it in the first place?

Looks like a typical racer built copy of chassis seen in the race reports of the era. Just not very well done even before the repairs were made. Looks like it may have even had the rear motor brace on the axle tube at one point as was the fashion and the owner did not want to ruin the Mura decal on this motor.

I have two Cobra/Phaze III anglewinders from that era, they don;t look much like that, especially the drop-arm configuration. It's possible it started out as one of those, but it's been pretty well hacked up along the way if that's the case.

Yes it is a real old slot car.

Martin,
I was pretty sure the body was a real db, but didn't know if the chassis had any significance.
At least it's parts!
