Retro Stock Cars on the Royal – 10/22/19

A field of eight racers headed to the American Royal this week to try their luck with stock cars. Racing was in the 4/4 format with 3 marshals and one person to run the race.

John Weaver showed up this week but didn’t have a stock car with him. No problem though, as he borrowed a chassis, installed a motor, mounted a body and proceeded to remind us all again that the driving part is probably more important than the equipment part as he jumped out to an early lead. Ray Lee had the fastest car of the night, topping Weaver’s best lap time by a few hundredths, but by the midpoint of the race found himself 3 laps behind John’s pace setting 161 lap-total. In third place Dave Panich was one lap behind Ray and running 2 laps ahead of a slightly faster Bob “Woody” Hazelwood.

There was a 10-lap gap to the rest of the field which was led by Rich Girvin who was also winning the “battle of the Richards” by 6 laps at the change to the inside lanes. Tom Smith was giving Richard P a race, trailing him by just one lap while Wayne Secore was another lap back and very much in the hunt.

Weaver was able to match his 1st half total on the inside lanes while Ray added to his but couldn't close the gap, allowing Weaver to take the win by 3. Dave fell off the pace on the inside lanes, thus opening the door for Woody to mount a challenge in one of two close contests on the evening. In the end, Dave held on to take the bottom podium step by one lap. Rich G took 5th with Richard P 7 laps behind. In the other close race of the evening, Tom was hounding Richard in the second half but couldn’t get by, ending up taking 7th, one lap off Richard P’s pace.

Fast lap honors went to Ray with 4.273, followed by Weaver and then Woody. Blue was the fast way around with 6 or 8 drivers posting their fastest lap on blue.

WOW that is an old Stalker design.  I believe I only made three of those with the 2-piece "L" shape at the front of the chassis.

A motor is only as fast as the chassis it's in.
