Can-Am on the King – 10/29/19

Can-Am on the Sovereign was on the schedule again this month but a pre-Halloween “skeleton” crew of just five racers showed up so the race was moved to the King. Racing was in the 4/4 format with only one marshal (at the deadman) with one of the drivers in charge of the track call button. Not ideal conditions but it worked.

The racers were on their best behavior due to the lack of marshals. In the early heats Bob “Woody” Hazelwood and Dave Panich were setting the pace with Woody leading Dave by 2 laps at the move to the inside lanes. Five laps back, Richard Payne held a 4-lap lead on Rich Girvin while Wayne Secore rounded out the field.

The second half saw Woody and Dave open the gap to the rest of the field as Dave closed the gap to Woody, but Woody was able to hang on to take the win by a lap and a half. Eleven laps back, Richard P claimed 3rd, almost 13 laps out in front of Rich G.

Woody and Dave were the only drivers to get into the 4.6s, with Woody taking the fast-lap of the night with a 4.608.

Final standings, laps completed, fast-lap time and lane:

  1. Bob Hazelwood       299/31    4.608      GN
  2. Dave Panich            298/16    4.655      YL
  3. Richard Payne         287/8      4.719      OR
  4. Rich Girvin               274/27    4.992      OR
  5. Wayne Secore         255/9      5.163      OR

Modelville might be the raceway with the longest consecutively running weekly retro racing program in the country. It was running before the last raceway here closed in August, 2010. Rich or Suzanne Payne could tell you when it was started.

My impression of streaming slot car races is that viewing most of them is like watching ants playing in dirt. :)

I'm a big Nelson fan, but I'm confused by his statement.

I don't see anyone tuning in(or knowing to tune in) that wouldn't already be there, if they really wanted to be.

Plus, I don't think guys at small weekly races, necessarily want other people "eavesdropping" on them.

Anyone who follows Modelville's retro racing reports will know that their weekly fields are usually larger than this one. Also, this race  was held two days before Halloween, so some of the no-shows may have had other priorities elsewhere.

For slot car racing, at this point, any publicity is good publicity. RJ's in Colorado does a good job with their stream cast and it gets stored at YouTube for free as far as I know..

This is just my opinion, but any slot racing video I've ever seen, was a waste of my time trying to watch what was going on or identifying which cars belonged to which drivers.  The only thing I've found them useful for was identifying people in the raceway if I knew any of them. I have participated in live stream woodworking programs numerous times & I find that doing so works better than live streaming slot cars. It's probably the slower motion of woodworking movements & the addition of closeups. I recently read that YouTube adds over a million new videos daily. Trying to find what's new on YouTube can be quite a maze. As far as I know, Google doesn't charge for adding a video online, but I can't image how much free usage data they collect from YourTube viewers, on top of the advertising revenue from the imbedded ads.  :laugh2:

How does a non-slot car racer know there is such a thing?

And I'm not sure any slot racers want everything they utter at a weekly race, stored in the public domain.

When you look at the views on You Tube it would hardly seem worth it, however, I am not sure you can tell how many might wander across RJ's posted videos on FB.

The retro cars can be followed quite well in the videos. Anything much faster is blurry.

This is a family hobby. Racers should be on their best behavior. :)
