These Guys Just Drove an E63 AMG Across America in a Record 27 Hours 25 Minutes

cbpic.jpg

Three guys you've probably never heard of recently broke a speed record most people don't care about – the New York to Los Angeles run referred to colloquially among aficionados as the Cannonball.

Unlike most speed records and races, there's no sanctioning body or official rules. That's because setting a Cannonball record invariably involves breaking multiple traffic laws. In other words, it's illegal. But that doesn't stop people from doing it.

Read the rest of the story HERE.

I remember reading all about the last record, in 2013.

I just remember how they said the car stunk from gasoline, most of the run, from the gas leaking from the fuel cell.

I don't remember anything about spotters, in the last run.

IMO, it takes a ton of the luster off of their achievement.

From the article;

In all, they managed to rustle up 18 lookouts along the run. These were people who drove hundreds of miles in many cases just to scout the road ahead of the fast-moving AMG for a stretch and let the team know of any police activity or other hazards ahead.

Google Maps will tell you it's a 42 hour trip via I-80, at 2811 miles.

If they did that in 28 hours, they AVERAGE 100 mph?

No thanks!

Skimming the article, I think it says they averaged 103 MPH, and alluded to taking advantage of the cars 160mph top speed.

a new record! yay. I liked the Gurney/Yates run better, a big bore 12 cylinder Ferrari and minimal protection from the police. The 365GTB has been one car i'd love to have owned.

Forget how fast you can get there, give me an old ambulance and a 30 year old Farrah Fawcett to ride along and it wouldn't matter to me if I ever got there.

Oh wait, that's been done!!

Scouts have been used for a long time. Other than having a lot of pure luck, it's the only way you could do it in that short of a time.

Back in the 70's I drove, with a friend, from Mid-Ohio raceway to Valparaiso in less than four hours in my E-type. There was a stretch

of I-80 where we were going just under 150. The car and I were both much younger then.

It was common for several of the Ferrari Club guys to have a race from Blackhawk Farms to the Como Inn after the FCA meet

out there. I don't remember anyone ever getting a ticket. I had the 206 back then.

Total respect for those guys.  Well planned.  Well executed.  Well done.

I read another article.

Apparently, their Garmin showed they hit 193 mph.

Dave mentioned his 206, which reminded me of a short video I had found on You Tube some time ago and had added it to my You Tube library.

I hadn't seen that one, thanks for posting. Although that is the SP version of the car, it was a full race Dino V-6 engine,

and sounds pretty much the same as my car did. Mine was built as a race car, then converted to meet DOT specs for

lights and bumpers. The engine was not detuned much, though.
