2020 a Season of Change for Bobby Gerhart
The 2020 ARCA Menards Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway is just five weeks away, and just like he has for the last 32 seasons, Lebanon, Pennsylvania’s Bobby Gerhart plans on being there.
An eight-time Daytona winner, Gerhart has his Daytona fleet prepped and ready to roll. The ARCA car is ready to put on the truck for pre-season testing and a new NASCAR Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series entry is ready to roll, too.
But there is one major change to the plan. Gerhart himself isn’t planning on being behind the wheel.
“I guess you could say I got the greatest Christmas gift of all,” Gerhart said in a recent phone interview. “I was at home and wasn’t feeling well and drove myself to the doctor. When I got there they said I had a pretty serious heart attack. It could have been a matter of five minutes or five hours, but had I waited, it’s pretty likely it would not have ended up as well as it did. I still have a very long road to go but I have been given a second chance here and for that I am very lucky and very grateful.”

Never forget that first place goes to the racer with the MOST laps, not the racer with the FASTEST lap

Billy's too old (sorry, my friend...) but I think the team ought to at least give Cap Henry a test!

I wish a speed recovery for Bobby.
I’ve never raced a fendered car; every test I was suppose to do fell through.

Tony Stewart made that transition pretty easily, didn't he?...

Rent a Ride. Locally, Frank Kimmel's old team run by his brother, Bill Jr., rents out their ARCA car for most races and Will doesn't drive many races any more.
We have a sprint car shop (A. J. Felker) that does all work in house, including engines. Last year a few of us did a visit to that shop and they told us that when they finished the work on customers cars they were doing at the time, it would be the last. They were going 100% to just renting their cars and no longer hiring a driver or working on other cars. The financial side of things was much better to just build engines and rent a ride.
I will be sorry to not see Bobby race Daytona, until all the NASCAR teams got involved in ARCA and threw major dollars at that series, Bobby was always near the front of the pack at the end of the race. There seems to be a special skill of seeing what the air is doing and where you should put your car. Bobby had that skill.
No mention was made of Lucas, I guess they are still the major sponsor on the ARCA car. Lucas is local to us, having been a native of Corydon, IN, and still having a home and major distribution center there. Mr. Lucas supports many kinds of racing and pulling series.
