Post Holiday Crowd Rocks at Fantasy!

Another great crowd of racers for the Hardbody Class after the New Year took to the hill climb at Fantasy Raceways Thursday night. Great to see our visiting racers from out of town joining our regulars and returning racers for another night of fender bangin' excitement!
When the smoke cleared, taking the checked flag was Randy Scott. Coming in second was the team of "Fast Frank" Panera and Rodger Hoffman. Mike Giocondo rounded out the top three.

Thanks so much to Jack and Mike, Bill, Darryl and Rodger for helping while Jeff was out.

Happy New Year to all and thanks for your continued support!

The Hardbody class runs every Thursday at Fantasy. Grab your gear, head on over to Rochester and join the fun!

Is it Winter time? Yep, January 7.

You wouldn't know it from the hot Retroflex racing action at Fantasy Raceways!

Twelve Drivers took to the hillclimb to duke it out in the two Mains.

In the B Main John Voellinger continued his ascent up the Leader Board taking the top spot on the podium this week. Rich Buchholz turned the fast lap of the group with a 4.89 on white but couldn't quite get to the checkered flag ahead of John finishing just one lap behind. Rich Joslin with his best lap total to date rounds out the top three.

Jim Harter was the best of the best on this night. His fast lap of 4.78 on orange helped him cruise to a comfortable three lap victory. Jeff Eve maintained a consistently fast pace to capture second place just two laps ahead of Darryl "Mr. X" Voleshen in the third spot.

Yes, and as a father, it is my sworn duty to kick his butt at slot racing. He has yet to de-throne the king.

Long live the King!

Any other father/son duos out of there?

My son raced with me during the 90's before spending a 20 yr. career in the Army. He sometimes out-qualified me, but in the races, I always came out ahead. Toda,y he lives in Arizona & neither of us have a local raceway, but i still have the cars. :)

Before we get to the racing action, a "get well soon" shout out to Fantasy Raceways proprietor and all around good guy Jeff Eve as he recovers from a recent surgery. He is missed and we all look forward to seeing him back at the track very soon! He may want to get back sooner than later as our hostess Bobbi Eve did a great job keeping the program rolling right along without his help.

Another Tuesday, another Retroflex brawl on the banked turns of the 145' Ogilvie euro hill climb. This week A and B Mains were on the track together in a full house battle that delivered plenty of fender rubbing action with the occasional multi-car pile up thrown in just to keep everyone on their toes. It was clear from the start that the A Main veterans had the upper hand. Podium regular Darryl "Mr. X" Voleshen and Matt "Bones" Lees weaved their way through the traffic and accident scenes like it was a just another commute home on the local interstate. The two pushed each other the whole night with "Bones" claiming the top step of the podium by .06 of a lap. Darryl's 4.89 fast lap of the night on the white lane just wasn't quite enough. Rich Buchholz finished a lap ahead of his father Dave to claim the third spot on this week's podium. Dave may have jinxed himself with some family style trash talking, see previous posts in this thread. Just sayin'.  :victory:

If it's Tuesday it's Retroflex Racing at Fantasy Raceways in Rochester NY.

Fantasy Raceways Retroflex Drivers were pleased to see Jeff Eve back at the track after recovering from a recent surgery. We are all hoping his recovery continues to go smoothly. A lot of us lean on Jeff for technical help with our cars so it was comforting to see him in his usual "Master Technician" chair. As a way of saying thanks we don't even hold it against him that he regularly thumps most of us when the racing starts!  :)

Ten racers braved the cold on this night to test their skills on the hill climb. Separating the field into A and B Mains helped keep the racing competitive for all involved.

Francisco Thorne and Mike Giocondo started the night off with some great driving in the B Main. After the eight stints the two were separated by only .07 of a lap with Francisco taking the win. His fast lap of the group on orange of 5.074 certainly helped. Rich Joslin managed to hold off hard charging Joe Arena for the third spot on the podium.

Mike Giocondo 2nd - Francisco Thorne 1st - Rich Joslin 3rd

The previously mentioned Jeff Eve cranked out the fast lap of the night of 4.861 on orange but it wasn't enough to keep Darryl "Mr. X" Voleshen from the top of the podium. A between stint tire change helped Darryl's car settle in and he kept Jeff at bay to win by about 2 laps. Dave Buchholz overcame some mechanical issues to cruise to a solid 3rd place finish.

Classic Plastic Hard Body action is on the schedule for Thursday January 23.

Retroflex racing resumes Tuesday January 28.

The action is fast and furious and the crowd is friendly so if you are in the Rochester area please be sure to stop by Fantasy Raceways to meet our gracious hosts Bobbi and Jeff Eve and see what all the excitement is about!

Retroflex at Fantasy January 21

The weather was mild but the racing was wild as always at Fantasy Raceways in Rochester, NY!

With the group of 10 divided down the middle we had Marshals for the key corners with very limited "track" calls to delay the racing.

In the B Main Dave Buchholz jumped out to a lead and was never threatened as he cruised to a comfortable 8 lap win. He also took fast lap honors with a 4.95 lap on the green lane. The battle for 2nd and 3rd was close most of the race with "New Guy" Rich Joslin finally separating a bit from Matthew Lees in the final stint to finish in 2nd place. Matthew was all smiles as he made it to the podium in third.

Fantasy 1-28 B Main results.jpg

Fantasy 1-28 B Main podium.jpg

Dave Buchholz - 1st  Matthew Lees - 3rd  Rich Joslin - 2nd

The A Main was the cleanest run race I have seen in my admittedly limited racing experience. Marshals could have taken naps and the drivers wouldn't have noticed or cared! Jim Harter's white McLaren was never out of the slot. Jim parlayed that clean driving with a 4.884 fast lap of the night on red to coast to a 4 lap victory. Darryl "Mr. X" Voleshen took 2nd place with our host Jeff Eve rounding out the podium in the third spot.

Fender rubbing Classic Plastic Hard Body action resumes Thursday January 30.

Retroflex Drivers will test their skills again Tuesday February 4.

Fantasy Raceways is the place to be for fast paced racing action. If you are in the area stop on in and see what all the excitement is about!

Retroflex racing was back and better than ever Tuesday at Fantasy Raceways.

Ten drivers had their cars prepped and ready to challenge each other and the cleaned and freshly glued track for the checkered flag. Over the last several weeks the racing has tightened up to the point that our hosts, Bobbi and Jeff Eve, decided a qualifier was in order to separate the group for the two Mains having five in each. Sections run in 30 seconds on orange was the method chosen and it worked quite well.

I'm not sure what got into the drivers in the B Main but it could easily be argued that they provided the best action of the evening. After five stints all four remaining racers were on the same lap! The close racing continued to the finish with only two laps separating the top three. John Voellinger returned to the top of the podium once again. The photographer likes it when John wins because he is so tall it makes it look like we have an actual podium! Joe Arena had his best race to date finishing in second place. Along with claiming a spot on the podium Joe ran the fast lap of the group, a 4.944 on red. Also with his best lap total to date, Rich Joslin filled out the podium taking the third spot.

The A Main group had a tough act to follow but as usual they did not disappoint. While not quite as clean as last week the racing was fast and close from start to finish. Jim Harter ran his winning streak to two crossing the finish line a couple of laps ahead of the pack. The battle for second place was quite the duel. A mere .02 of a lap separated Darryl "Mr. X" Voleshen from Jeff Eve. All drivers adjusted well to the track conditions with lap times being generally faster but Jeff turned in a blistering 4.769 on white for the best lap of the night. A special mention to Matthew Lees who, by qualifying for the A Main, earned the opportunity to run head to head against his father Matt and the rest of the "fast guys." Congratulations Matthew.

Retroflex racing was back in action on the Ogilvie Hill Climb Tuesday night. Attendance was a bit lighter than recent weeks but still enough racers to make for some exciting fast paced action.

Starting the night off on a good note was the B Main group. Dave Buchholz jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Dave's multiple clean stints helped him cruise to 6 lap margin of victory. Matthew Lees improved on his lap total from last week to take second place just a head of Joe Arena. Joe's fast lap of the group a 4.960 on blue helped get him to the podium for the second straight week.

Jeff Eve was not to be denied a victory this week. He had a smoking fast lap of 4.779 on green and crossed the finish line a comfortable 3 laps ahead of the rest of the A Main drivers. After a slow start Matt "Bones" Lees worked hard to get himself back on the podium with a second place finish. Less than 1 lap back in third place was podium regular Darryl "Mr. X" Voleshen. Special mention this week goes to "New Guy" Rich Joslin who took advantage of qualifying to make his first appearance in the A Main.

Fantasy Raceways NASCAR Celebration

With the Daytona 500 on tap the 16th Bobbi and Jeff Eve, the proprietors of Fantasy, made Saturday February 15 NASCAR day at the track. The racing started with a 250 lap NASCAR Hard Body event. The second race was the "500 Before The 500." Cars for this race followed the Retroflex rule set utilized for the weekly Tuesday runs. The one exception being that a NASCAR body with interior be used. This report will focus on the "500 Before The 500."

Prior to kicking off the racing a concours contest was held. Drivers were encouraged to get creative in the spirit of the theme for the day. I must say they brought their "A" game. All ten cars looked good. The #5 Kellogg's car of John Voellinger was crowned the winner by vote of the participants. Francisco Thorne's #8 Budweiser car was voted the second place winner.

Fantasy NASCAR concours line-up.jpeg

Per recent races a 30 second qualifier was held to separate the group into A and B Mains. Format for the racing was our normal eight stints with each stint ending when someone reached 62 laps. The normal 2 minute break between stints was in place. There were plenty of marshals so track calls were at a minimum.

The B Main consisted of:

Fantasy NASCAR B Main group.jpg

Francisco Thorne - Joe Arena - John Voellinger - Bill Wojtyla - Fred Amann

Drivers started a little tentatively adjusting to the different format with much longer than normal stints. It wasn't long though before the adrenaline kicked in and the pace turned fast and furious. Early on Fred was forced to make an adjustment to his car's body under green and he fell several laps off of the lead. Once back on the track he mounted a consistent attack on the leaders and was soon back in the hunt. John, Fred, Joe and Francisco stayed close through the bulk of the race with John and Fred finally pulling away, turning this into a two man dash for the checkered flag. The photo below shows just how close the finish was. John's #5 just edging out Fred's #2 by maybe two car lengths. A pretty impressive finish after 485 laps! Joe Arena stayed closest to this duo to grab 3rd place.

Next up was the A Main group consisting of:

Fantasy NASCAR A Main group.jpg

Dave Buchholz - Darryl Voleshen - Jeff Eve - Rich Joslin - Pete Varlan

From the start it was obvious this would be a three car battle between Jeff, Darryl and Pete. The three jockeyed back and forth for several stints before Pete started experiencing some mechanical difficulties. He tried a few times to reenter the fray but to no avail as he eventually withdrew. At this point it was Darryl v. Jeff for the top and Dave v. Rich for the remaining podium position. After battling for 491 trips around the Hill Climb "Mr X" came out the winner by two laps over Jeff. "New Guy" Rich Joslin managed to eke out a two lap 3rd place finish over Dave.

It was a long day of racing and we would like to thank Bobbi and Jeff for putting together such a wonderful program. Race Director Bobbi did a terrific job keeping things rolling right along.

A special mention to Pete Varlan who rejoined the group after dealing with health issues over the last couple of months. It is great to see you back in action Pete!

Always good people and good racing at Fantasy Raceways in Rochester NY. If you find yourself in the area please stop in and see what all the excitement is about!

A slightly smaller group than usual was on hand Tuesday evening for Retroflex racing. That doesn't mean that the action was any less exciting.

The B Main provided an excellent start to the night with a hotly contested race. Joe Arena, Dave Buchholz and Matthew Lees kept within 2 laps of each other throughout. The gloves came off in the final stint and the battle to the finish line involved some fender banging action. When the smoke cleared it was Dave Buchholz who navigated the traffic best to take the checkered flag. Though Joe Arena had the fast lap of the group on orange with a 4.955 it was Matthew Lees sliding into 2nd place by a mere .04 of a lap.

It was a tough act to follow but the A Main gave it their best shot. Jeff Eve and Matt "Bones" Lees jumped out in front and kept the pedal down turning this into a two man battle. With the fast lap of 4.813 on white and his usual solid driving Jeff pulled away and posted a comfortable 4 lap victory. Matt Lees, never challenged, finished second. "New Guy" Rich Joslin rounds out the podium with a 3rd place finish.

Up next Thursday February 20 is Classic Plastic Hardbody racing.

Another nice report Rich. You're giving the Rochester raceway lots of publicity they wouldn't be getting otherwise. Sometime could you post a photo showing as much of the hillclimb as you can squeeze in? In the early 2000's Rochester had an Ogilvie hillimb, that I think came from Buffalo, with a mirrored layout to the one we had in Manchester, NH. I'm just curious if you're still running on the same track. :)

Thank you for the comment Bill. I am not sure of the history of the Track though I know Fantasy has been in the area for quite some time.

If my reports help in some small way that is great. Jeff and Bobbi have treated me very well since I started with this hobby in October and having read numerous threads here I realize how fortunate I am to have a track in my city let alone within 10 minutes of my house!

The picture below is the best one I have at the moment. Hope it helps.

Rich, thanks for the track photo. It's not the track from Buffalo that I thought it might be. I was on an Ogilvie track very similar to your photo when it was in both Merrimack, NH & Merrimac, MA. It was a fun fast track to run on. As of a couple years ago, it was being stored in Pawtucket, RI along with a smaller hillclimb we used to have in Manchester, NH.

Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday!!

Yes I like Tuesday because it is Race Day for the Retroflex Class at Fantasy Raceways.

Turnout was a little light this evening so it was decided to forego the usual A Main, B Main grouping. Seven lanes filled with drivers and cars ready to rumble on the 145' hill climb. Rumble they did!

No marshals on hand made "track" calls an all too familiar refrain for the evening. Racers were more inclined to push hard and take chances making for some interesting car v. car v. wall interactions. The extensive racing experience of Darryl Voleshen and Jeff Eve was evident as they somehow managed to run as if it were just another day at the track. When the smoke cleared Darryl was a full lap in front of Jeff even though Jeff drove the fastest lap of the evening on the green lane, a 4.778. There was a back and forth battle among the remaining 5 drivers all evening long for the last podium position. Dave Buchholz kept his car in the slot pretty well the entire race and was rewarded for his steady driving with the third place finish.

On tap at Fantasy:

HO racing Wednesday February 26

Classic Plastic Hard Body action on Thursday February 27

That's right, excitement is always brewing at Fantasy Raceways. Stop on by and see just what I am talking about.

The tally shows that even though I had the overall slowest "fast lap" that getting on the podium isn't always about who has the fastest car. The driver still has to keep it on the track. Can't win if you aren't in.

Any one for Pizza and Wings? Sunday March 1 was Pizza and Wing day at Fantasy....Wing car racing that is!

Seven drivers settled on a nice way to keep things competitive for all involved. Qualifying split the group with four racers in the B Main and the stipulation that the winner of the B would then have a shot at the top qualifiers in the A Main.

Jeff Eve ran away from the pack in the B Main by consistently running 3.7s including a 3.715 for fast lap of the group. Jeff's 341 laps earned him the win and a second race. I wonder if Race Director Bobbi Eve made him pay twice? John Voellinger raced well and secured a comfortable second place finish. Bill Wojtyla and George Foster engaged in a close battle for the final podium position with Bill hanging on to a three lap margin for third.

The A Main was a much closer affair. After the first few stints the group was bunched up within a few laps of each other. "Mr. X" couldn't quickly resolve a handling issue, eventually withdrawing and suddenly it was a three man race. Rich Buchholz got in a groove ripping off consistent low 3.7 laps and he started to pull away. With two stints remaining Rich held an eleven lap lead. Jeff made a furious run and cut into the lead some but Rich held steady to take the checkered flag for the win. Rich's 3.672 was the fastest lap of the day. Jeff Eve took advantage of his entrance in the A with a second place finish. Dave Buchholz rounds out the podium in third place.

One of the few times father and son have appeared on the podium together. I actually had the lead at the end of two segments but the motor faded away  allowing only 4.2 second laps about 3.6 -3.8s.   well at least it was good for third, and to be a proud father of my son's win. ( Wait till next time BOY)

Another fine race report by Rich Joslin. I finally got off my duff and made it to a race at Fantasy, hopefully the first of many. Got to meet a great group of people, everyone willing to help out. Jeff and Bobbi keep a great track with a friendly atmosphere. I kind of jumped in at the deep end, having no prior experience with wing cars - definitely requires a different mindset to keep it punched and not brake. Rich Buchholz gave me a lot of good advice on car setup, and even let me drive the winning car after the main. I simply could not stop myself from braking for most of the turns, even after Rich showed me it was unnecessary. Oh well.

This was only my 2nd 1/24 race - the last one was in 1971, at Nutley/Belleville, when I talked my parents into taking me there for a monthly race on our summer vacation (age 15). Only made it through the first lane change in an amateur consy with my brand new Tony P open class RTR - jumped a lane on the straight, smashed full speed in the deadman, broke off the guide flag (remember those tiny screws we melted into the guide?). Thank goodness slot racing is still alive at tracks like Fantasy Raceways.

"Mr. T", "The Professor", "Dr. Evil", all the same guy to me depending on the day, my mood and/or the topic of conversation, has been pestering me to include a link to Fantasy's Facebook Page in my Race Reports. I'm not a Facebook guy and never will be but just to get him off my case here it is.

I'm so glad Tuesday is never more than seven days away. If it were any longer I just couldn't stand it.

Fantasy Retroflex let's get it on...

Nine determined racers showed up each looking to have some fun and make it to the podium. Qualifying would put five in the B Main with the winner having the option to compete against the A Team.

The B Main had a nice twist this week with young Matthew Lees facing off against his father Matt. The rest of the group was Rich Buchholz, "New Guy" Rich Joslin and John Voellinger. It was an interesting race for a variety of reasons but John stayed focused and sharp and somewhat quietly cruised to the lead and stayed there pretty much the entire event. He ended his race with a commanding seven lap margin of victory. Rich Buchholz finished in the second position. Matthew took advantage of some motor issues his Dad was having to take third place by three laps. Matt Lees had the fast lap of the group on orange, a 4.926.

In the interest of hoping to get to work on time, imagine that, John declined the opportunity to compete in the A Main. Taking to the track in this group were Dave Buchholz, Jeff Eve, Pete Varlan and Darryl "Mr. X" Voleshen. Early on Dave withdrew and we had a three man race. It was a pleasure to watch as these experienced drivers ran fast lap after fast lap with very few come offs. Instead of reacting to crashes the marshals were able to relax and enjoy the racing. "Mr. X", pushing close to the total lap record of 196, came out on top. Jeff made a great effort to catch Darryl but it was not to be and finished second. Pete Varlan, only four laps off the lead, completed the podium in third. Each of the three had multiple laps in the 4.7s with Jeff having the best, a 4.733 on green.
