The 2020 Checkpoint Cup on Saturday saw the usual packed house for Can Am, the premier race of the weekend with everyone scrambling for track time and motor testing!  43 racers were signed up to do battle on the BPR King track....

As with all the Can Am races at major SCRRA events, this event was a handout motor race with (3) JK Retro Hawks being available to each racer and everyone seemed to have a different way of breaking in the motors!

359 laps = 44.875 laps per lane for Duran.  Absolutely amazing run..    :clapping:

You're not kidding Tim; Duran was on a mission. Also, a very good run by Mill. The Checkpoint never disappoints.

Sometimes Duran is just on another level......I think he turned 46 laps in a couple heats!   He lapped the 2nd Place finisher nearly TWO TIMES every heat!  :shok:

Fun weekend! Anyone notice Jerry Johnson's lap totals in the D and E Mains? Either of them would have gotten him 2nd in the A Main!

Have to give props to Jerry Johnson running 348.17, a total that was the 2nd highest overall!

All the MORE amazing that it was done from the E-main!; then ran 346 winning the D main laps, also good for second overall if done in the A main!

He exploited his speed AND a lot of luck - the other seven cars must have parted like the Red Sea!

That takes nothing away from Jerry, obviously, kept it in the slot, seized the moment and should be celebrated for an awesome race day performance!

It would be my hidden gem take-away if I had been thereto see it!

Sounds like he had a snafu in qualifying, as he had race laps in both the mains he won, over a .1 faster.

I'm curious to know happened to him in the C.

Yep,the shifter motor blues! Took the whole minute in qualifing for the motor to start running and the tires to start working. Was pretty good after that but still started most heats a little slow. I tried to use the same motor the next day in the F-1 race and the 2 speeds were way worse, running 4.6s to running 4.0s. Hard to make a move-up with a motor like that. And of course I didn't. Wish I knew what makes em do that! I was plagued by them all weekend.
At BPR, there is a big pole that supports the roof in the infield. When you are on white the pole blocked you view of the spot in the finger where all the offs end up. Need I say more? The brass plate cars we are all running will not take a big hit without turning into a taco! So in C main me and then Duran tried to fix it and did, but by this point I'd lost 20 laps. So we just called it a day.

I got to run with Jerry in the E main -- I'd start out going quicker in the first minute.  Then Jerry's motor would "shift" and I'd let him by every 5-6 laps!!! We were doing the same thing in the D main when I got "shunted" into the lead on wall and knocked a rear bearing out!! Still,  fun day running with all my racing buddies at BPR!! Racing luck--there's nothing like it!!  :shok:  :laugh2:

Jerry... It looked to me in qualifying like your tires were the main culprit, more than the motor. It looked like you were sliding worse than any of the qualifiers. Did you end up changing tires, or did they just come in during the race? All I know is when I saw you coming up from the E main with your lap total, I thought "Oh well, only one chance of a move up now!" I had my own two-step motor. Hard to explain exactly, it just seemed to speed up on occasion, then slow down for much of the heat. I do agree about the fragility of the pan chassis: If you don't qualify fast enough to get into a higher main you run the risk of more crashes and potential damage.

I spoke with Jerry the next day and asked why he did not move up the "C" Main and he said the car was damaged and could not continue. I realize it is difficult to move up several times and most of the time the motor slows down. I raced against Jerry in the "C" Main and his car was slow for the first few laps and then sped up. I enjoyed racing this weekend and that is why I go to BPR.

My car is built from a kit Brian makes up it's been the best car I've had since day 1. Been racing it without any reinforcment and got away with it for awhile. Its got a little extra wire in it now! The bent up strut that holds the front axle does a very effective job of transfering the impact load from the front wheel to the rest of the chassis. Instant taco! I kinda think using soldered on wires to hold the axle like a Hy-Tech chassis might take a shot a little better. Or not hitting anything would be good too!

Yep my qualifying laps were used up mainly by the tires. I have no idea what happened. They were ok for the practice laps and I thought they were broke in. I started the race with them and then the motor and tires seem to come in at the same time. Never changed either. Had a lot of fun for a little while!

Jerry, I have not seen that problem with the way my chassis is all tied together. If you were to cut off the uprights for the front axle and duplicate the way I attach the axle. I believe it would be almost reliable as mine.
