Formula 1 on the King – 2/11/2020

This week it was back to the King to run F1 one more time. With six racers in the field the race was run with three drivers on the track and three marshaling the turns. All racers ran the four outside lanes then the action moved to the four inside lanes.

F1 Cars in Tech:

In the second outing for his new chassis Richard Payne was hoping for a repeat of last month’s F1 win on the King while Dave Panich changed to a different chassis to see if he could close the three-lap gap that had relegated him to second place in January.

In the early heats the racing was close as Wayne Secore took the first heat, a lap up on Richard. In subsequent heats Bob "Woody" Hazelwood, Dave and Dan Savage also showed some speed. By the move to the inside lanes Richard had posted 151 laps and was tied with Woody in second place with both holding a one-lap advantage over Wayne. A somewhat surprised Dave found himself running at the front of the pack with 160 laps. Dan was putting up fast laps but trailed Wayne by 4 while Rich Girvin was another seven laps back.

With just three marshals, the “deadman”, the “90” and the “lead-on” get covered but “under the bridge” is a track call. Just after the move to the inside lanes Woody had an unusual “under the bridge” track call as he left the track in the “finger” and ended up “under the bridge”…but on the adjacent American Royal! Definitely a track call!

Dan came on strong in the second half, posting eight more laps than in the first half while Dave struggled with compromised handling after a crash and posted eight fewer laps than his initial effort. This gave both Woody and Richard an opening as they sorted out their mid-race tie and tried to close the gap to Dave.

As the race wound down, Woody was suffering from a slight lack of horsepower allowing Richard to get the better of him by two laps and take 2nd but Dave hung on for the win. Dan’s strong finish left him just two laps off the podium in 4th while Wayne finished another 3 laps back. Rich G closed out the field.

Woody and Dan posted identical 4.546 best laps as Dave's second-heat pre-crash time of 4.383 held up as fastest lap of the evening.
