The Fray in Ferndale is an HO slot car race event that was started in 1997 by Rick Phillis and Bob Marketos.
Shortly after they met, Phillis suggested that they have a semi-annual race between their clubs and in 1991, the Invitational was initiated. That first year all the teams were from the West Coast. It was a huge success and the race was met with great enthusiasm.
When asked where this race got its name, 'Slotcar Bob' Marketos responded, “I was the one that came up with it. The term ‘Fray’ was used because it fit with Ferndale, two Fs, and the definition was appropriate… noun (the fray): a situation of intense activity, typically one incorporating an element of aggression or competition, a battle or fight: Nineteen companies intend to bid for the contract, with three more expected to enter the fray.”

The 2020 event date is set for March 6-7. The IROC team event will be Thursday, March 5, the individual competition will be Friday March 6 and the team competition will be Saturday, March 7.
For the 2020 Fray in Ferndale, the Individual competition will be standard Fray cars. Seeding will be determined by an Indy style time trial. Each driver’s seeding will be determined by his average time over a three lap run. The drivers are then ranked and seeded according to their four lap average lap time. A better qualifying time will result in higher seeding and fewer chances to be eliminated. Move ups are determined first by points (1st-6 point, 2nd-5 points, 3rd– 4 points…). If there is a point tie, the tie breaker will be the number of laps. If there is a point and lap tie, the overall run time will be the tie breaker.
We will start with the “Z” main and work to the “A” main. In the mains, every person will drive a 10 lap heat in each lane to determine who moves up to the next bracket. Seven drivers will be seeded in the “B” main with three moving up from the “C” main. These ten drivers will run it off to determine which six go to the “A” main.
Once again, each team may tech in up to 15 cars with the team racing being run in its normal format.
