When doing the panel lines on a typical slot car body with say, a Parma detail pen, is there anything that could be used to remove a mistake when you have a "slip of the pen"? Something that doesn't "craze" or ruin the body? Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on the marker, I use rubbing alcohol, or lighter fluid. Neither will hurt the body.

Another vote for good, old-fashioned lighter fluid and a Q-Tip.

For bigger removal tasks, I had good results with Parma's Fashine Body Wash & Wax.  I've even removed lacquer paints with it without damaging the body.

If you can get it, buy some MEK. It works faster, and with little to no rubbing. Just use it in a well ventilated area, as the fumes are quite capable of altering your perception of reality.

Not sure I'd use MEK on Lexan or PETG bodies.

MEK is the active ingredient in paint strippers, too HOT for what you need Jeff. Stick to the safer advice given above. and below :)

Parma markers clean up better with lighter fluid, and Sharpies prefer rubbing alcohol. Or vice versa. I can't remember which one is which.

I always used lighter fluid with Sharpies, but denatured alcohol with most stained glass markers. I don't recall using rubbing alcohol, but I might have.

Parma Fasshine is the best for this.

Except Fasshine is not made anymore and whats left is not readily available. Its a shame that

an "iconic" company like Parma went down the tubes.

postage is a little high.

MEK will not harm Lexan! I have been using it for over 20 years, and have yet to have a body dissolve on me.

I forgot to put on my window mask once using the lacquer base paint.

I used brake fluid DOT3. Took the paint right off and left the window clear as before the paint.

Many thanks for all the responses. Most of the remedies mentioned I have tried and I generally always use lighter fluid as well. However, the reason I brought this up was I had a friend that worked in a shop that had all kinds of chemicals. But this was back in the 80's. Since most of us are always looking for stuff that just might have a purpose in our hobby, one time he had brought me a small jar of what I thought he said was Methanol (I think). It was crystal clear and it removed detail pen mishaps instantly without any harm to Lexan. My little jar of miracle liquid has been long gone many years ago and my buddy can't recall what it actually was. Anyway, Mike mentioned MEK (Methal Ethyl Ketone) which sounded kind of close and it definitely removed the detail pen but it crazed the scrap body I tried it on. I haven't tried the brake fluid test yet but it sounds interesting. Again, thanks to all for the responses.

The bottom line is that almost anything will remove permanent marker from a slot car body.

Best thing I've found for fixing/cleaning permanent marker/detail pen ink on lexan bodies is contact cleaner for electronics. Just spray a bit on a cotton rag and wipe. Takes it off easy, no crazing, no smell, nothing.
