Wow! I wish I could make that. I grew up in West Allis during the 1960s. My Pops was the Fire Chief on the South Turn during the USAC heyday at the track. Usually ran 6 races a year, if I recall. The week after Indy, 3 during Fair week and two others during the USAC season. Lots of great memories of sitting in on the driver's safety meetings before races. Then sitting out on the fence watching the cars hit Turn 1, jockey for position, then heading out Turn 2 on the backstraight. We could tell by the sound of the engines whether a pass was successful or failed! I was at the race where AJ Foyt;s main ride wasn't delivered so he unloaded his Offenhauser dirt track car and nearly won the race!
Pops and I watched as Granatelli ran his turbines, both the original and wedges. The internal combustion cars would roar past our position while the turbines would lay down a little whine as they passed by. It was Amazing! The USAC rule changed them out of existence. AAAhhh! Those were the days at the Milwaukee Mile.
If only I still all those driver's autographs. Sigh...
