I was inspired by some of the Early Modifieds that are run by the PASER club in Oregon. Since most of our guys are not builders, I thought that our Econo chassis would be the perfect platform for the build. All of our club members own at least one of these chassis. Since I had an extra chassis I soldered the push bars, however, Ron came up with a bolt on idea that I will post as Ron completes his build.

Ron just completed his 36 Ford early modified. Attached are some images. BTW, I did some testing with my completed car. As I suspected it is nearly .2 seconds/lap faster than with another body affixed.  I believe the reason is that these cars are much lighter than the others we have run in the past

We are using small L-brackets made from corner protectors. I am using 4 while Ron has used only 2. The brackets are attached to the side pans. (Obviously, the Econo side pans must be drilled and countersunk.  If I get a chance, I will post an image of my 37.  BTW these cars and very quick and handle great due to their light weight.

Questions about the rules... I don't want to build a car and find it to be non-compliant. 

 

• Bodies can be cut across the bottom so as to have a minimum body height of 1.930" at the lowest point of the top.

  Shouldn't that be the highest point?

• Sunroof may be cut out. Maximum dimensions TBD. The sunroof must be located above the drivers’ seat

  Bob has a pretty cool 1938 (?) sedan that has a longer roof, but no scribed sunroof line.  I think it should be allowed a larger opening.

• Running boards must be installed to cover the bulk of the Econo chassis side pans

  Do the examples above have styrene running boards, or just painted side-pans?  What percentage is "the bulk"?

• Must have a scale motor and radiator up front (oil pan can be modified to fit on top of the chassis)

  Is a motor/radiator required if the body is built with full hood, side-panels, and grill?

 

Is it okay to use big-wheel / tire combos of the same size as econo tires?  I am thinking that a white car with red numbers and wheel-inserts would look the bomb.

Body height - I have a slight rake so the top is higher (about 2 inches) in the rear and 1.93 in the front. The reason is that I did not want cut into the trunk lid in order to have tire clearance. So, lowest point on top should be no less than 1.93. if the rear is taller it is OK. Body height is measured from the bottom of the chassis to the top

 

Some models do not even have a "scribed" sunroof, so the size may be larger on "scribed cars". What I wanted to avoid was that is someone had a sedan, nearly all of the roof could be cut away unless I limited the size of the sunroof.  I will measure my 37s sunroof and post but as long as it is reasonable I will allow the car.

 

I have changed my mind regarding running boards. All that I want is that the side pans have some kind of covering. Ron painted his black (not sure this is a good solution because the paint flakes off. I chose to use gorilla tape. I works great and sticks well (I was afraid that it would be too hard to remove and leave a residue - but on brass it does not. It acts like a normal good tape and sticks fine but is not a pain to remove). You may choose either method or fabricate some running boards (I think that is too much work and adds little). Check out the image of my 37. I said bulk because the front and rear push bars may attach to the side pans and would be a pain to cover so these may be allowed to show also, if a bit of the rattle bar shows it is OK.  I tried to cover it but had to cut a notch on the inner side of the rattle bar up to the outside of the body to make it sit flat. 

 

Motors are required. I want to be able to see the motor.  The rules allow for a top hood (no side panels) If you choose this direction, no firewall is required. If not, and you choose to run no hood at all you must include a firewall.  If you choose to use a wrap around grill,  top hood I will assume that the radiator is enclosed in the grill and therefore not required as a stand alone

 

I don't care what tires you use tires as long as they are the size of the Econos

I noticed that you had to really ream out the rear wheel openings and cut down the bottom of the body to hit the height target.

 

And where did that hood come from ???

All hoods came with kits except the 32. There I cut down a hood from an old Chevelle. Yes, you really have to cut out the wheel wells.

We ran a dirt modified class in the club I used to belong to. The photo isn't good, but it shows a line-up for a race. We had a

bunch of fun with these. 

 

 

We used the stamped brass American Line chassis that was sold as a kit with a hot rod body. It is heavy brass, and just works

really well with a Falcon II or III motor.
