What would need to be done to make a Cox controller usable at a modern track? Would heavier gauge wires be needed? A new resistor? Could a Parma resistor be used?

Anyone have any thoughts?

I used them with my 4 lane layout for awhile and they were ok but not great. I had to switch 2 wires but don't remember which 2 at the moment. Never really liked them though because they worked more like an on/off switch than being easily controllable. Push the button a little, nothing.. push it a little more and it was full throttle and off the track. Dumped them for Parma controllers and never looked back. Here is a chart I found that lists the various ohm ratings if it helps any

I remember the black handled controller being adjustable.     I don't remember the handles being dark green.     I remember a female socket you could plug it into and use alligator clips that came out the other end.   I think the adapter came with the black adjustable controller .

Only the Mk7 is adjustable and it's black. That's the one that had an adapter between the built-in phone jack and the alligator clips. 

 

The Cox would work on a modern track; it's just a question of matching the ohms to the motor (and that's the only reason it operates like an on-off switch, nothing to do with the controller itself). 

 

But the wiring is thinner than we're used to and it probably won't hold up as well as a basic Parma even. You could probably rewire, adapt another resistor, etc., but why bother? 

 

A lot of the English guys I race with prefer thumb controllers and there are a few people in the UK who make modern thumb controllers with bells and whistles. If that's what you're looking for, try contacting Andy at ABSlotsports, or maybe Pendle's. 

 

When I started racing again in the 1990s, I had a couple old Cox and MRC controllers and tried racing with them, but just couldn't get the hang of it again - not to mention that the Parma Turbo and basic controllers were just more suited to the cars we were running; but even on my vintage cars, I couldn't get used to them again. The index finger had spoken!

Thats the Cox controller chart I made. And I never did find out what the product code number and ohmage was on  the Cox MK4a Red/Silverflake (handle).

I too thought that the Cox MKVII was Black but the one I have has a Dark Green handle.

 

The Pro was the only Cox controller to go down to 2.5 ohms. But this was not variable! The other controller of the period which was like the Cox MkVII and had variable controls was the MRC (Model Rectifier Corporation) Enduro Varipower 1200 and this went down to 2.5 ohms in later version. I have both types of this controller and my variable one that goes down to 2.5 ohms has an three pin adaptor to run on our track.

I am no expert on electronics but it depends on what slotcars your running. I am no slotcar racer but still use a SCD thumb hand controller and a trigger one as well.

What are you planning to use it for?

 

In other words, what kind of motors?

 

Actual racing, or just fun?

 

It might work okay on an easy track, with a lot of on and off, but if you're going to run it on a road course, where you're spending a lot of times in the middle bands, chances are it's going to get really warm in your hand, even with heavier wire.

I used the Towerstat yellow back in the 60's.   It would get hot, but it you could hold it  without having your hand wrapped around it.     It was cheap compared to Cox, but it worked great.

I was thinking about using a thumb controller because that was the type of controller I used with my Thunderjet 500 figure 8 set.as the years passed, I learned to use a Russkit style controller. I thought I’d see how I would do if I used a thumb controller again. I decided to try and use a Cox controller on an H.O. track, but I thought an old Cox controller would need to be upgraded to deal with modern power supples.

No matter how big you go to rewire these older controllers, they still have only a 25 WATT resistor of any ohmage.  Most modern tracks and cars like the 3 to 4 ohm resistor and a basic Turbo is rated at about 40 Watt.  Most electronic and external resistor controllers are rated at a minimum of 100 Watt.

 

All trigger controllers can be used with your thumb, just roll it over in your hand and use the thumb.

You make a number of good points. Maybe Ill hook up an old Aurora thumb controller and see how it feels before I try to take this idea any further.
