As I sit here in the Spring of my lockdown boredom, I have started digging through my slot archives, and I found these two half-century-old scratchbuilt chassis, dating from somewhere around 1970 or so, plus or minus a year or two. One by Lee Gilbert, the other built my me when I was a wee lad. Both were repeatedly raced, crashed, and crudely repaired until they were eventually retired and given a place of honor in my slot car museum (aka junkbox.) No attempt has been made to restore or rebuild them, they are in every bit as bad condition as they were when I finally laid them aside. Both have clearly seen better days (although all of the hinge movements are still working!) Nothing  of any importance here, just a minor bit slot car history and, for me, nostalgia.

If you look closely you may be able to see "Chassis by Lee Gilbert" engraved on the bottom of the first one. The second one is my build.

Yes, but I just couldn't see putting that much work into chassis I'm not going to run, but are just going to sit there unseen in my junkb...er, museum for another half-century.....

They look pretty darned good to me for all that racing! I'd probably still be using them.

Yours looks well-built, especially if you were a youngster. I stopped before anglewinders, so never got to try my hand at that in my teens.

Lee Gilbert is a famous name in slots so that's a good one to have. I never met Lee, but I think I saw his ghost once or twice at Empire Hobbies, when I raced there in 74-75...

Splitting/cutting the drop arm (in the first pic) like that must of been a way to put more flex in the chassis?

Then someone added the wire to fine tune it maybe?

Anybody here remember specifics of this mod?

This one is an Emott.

More flex, more bite.

Thanks. The Gilbert was part of a Lee Gilbert RTR that I ordered from Ron Granlee at Speed&Sport for a big race in Miami, which was 200 miles from my home at that time. It arrived a day too late, so I found it waiting for me when I got back. My mom was furious when she found out how much of her money I had paid for it...

No reason why you can't run them once in a while just to remind you of what it was like back then.
