SERRA™ Race #6, Cleveland, TN - record turn-out!

Posted 25 August 2008 - 06:52 AM
There were 45 entries in the three classes, with 27 racers attending. Thunder Valley's reverse Kingleman is a great track, as smooth as anywhere we've raced, and with almost no "gotchas".
Thanks to all the racers who traveled long distances to run at this event: Butch Dunaway from OH, Don Weaver and Don Berni from SC, and Bobby Robinson and Steve Saunders from AL. There are probably some travelers I need to mention, and I will do so this evening when I have the sign-up sheets at hand.
Due to other committments, I was unable to get the pics and race results posted yesterday, and today, as usual, work is getting in the way of slot racing (I just hate that...). Getting the pics and results posted is near the top of today's after-work to-do list (slotted in right after dinner, of course).
Thanks to all who helped us have a great day of retro racing!

That third place should really be credited to Don Weaver of Greenwood, SC, who lent me one of the best-handling F1 cars I've ever driven. All I had to do was slap on the Mac-painted body I bought at the Sano last year and install a new set of rear tires and it was ballistic, as the lap time shows.
This is the same car Randall Durham drove at our SERRA race in Abbeville, SC, where he finished a lap behind the winner, Jay Guard.
If I could have driven it the way it deserved to be driven, it would have finished in first place without a doubt.

Thanks, Pablo. As you can see by the lap times I was nowhere near the fastest car but I had a good clean run. My body still looked new at the end of the race. Can't say the same for the Can-Am race, I stunk the place up in that one. As a matter of fact, I took out four other cars in one turn on the first lap.Nice job in F1, Pappy.
I'd like to thank Bart Merriman (the owner of Thunder Road) for hosting a great race. The track is great, the establishment is great, and Bart is one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet. Thanks, Bart
I'd also like to thank Cheater and Jay for putting on the event. Everything went smooth as glass and was a lot of fun. Thanks, guys.

Yes, it was a great turnout for the SERRA races this past Saturday at Thunder Road Raceway in Cleveland, TN. Bart, Katrina, and his helpers were wonderful hosts. And I made some more new friends.
I hope Greg doesn't mind but I know a lot of you are waiting for some pictures of the event. Here are some for your enjoyment.
Thunder Road Raceway.
The Formula 1s. The slips of paper are the numbers and ballots for the racer-vote concours procedure that SERRA utilizes.

Jason Alexander, 116.1 grams.
Chris Barnes, 108.0 grams
Chad Harrington, 102.5 grams.
Butch "Pappy" Dunaway, 108.8 grams
Raymond "Speedy" Gonzalez, 111.7 grams. The racers voted this car both parts of Concours: Best Appearing and Most Realistic.
Jay Guard. (Somehow I forgot to shoot a pic of Jay's F1, so I grabbed these pics from an earlier race report.)
Eddie Lawley, 108.0 grams. All the F1 chassis were nicely done, but Eddie's work is so clean and so... well, perfect that it really stands out. It's slot car jewelry without the polishing.
Bobby Robinson, 100.8 grams. Hey, Bobby, when the new rules go into effect, that lead tape on the bottom won't fly!
Steve Harrington, 113.2 grams
Michael Shepard, 124.6 grams
Ralph Thorne Jr, racing a loaner from Butch Dunaway. 106.7 grams.
Don Weaver, 111.9 grams
Greg Wells, chassis by Don Weaver. 119.8 grams.

Chris Barnes, 104.3 grams. Cool spider-web paint job is definitely a retro touch. How do you do this, Chris?
Chad Harrington, 117.5 grams
Courtney Smith, 107.2 grams
Doug Smith, 117.8 grams
Butch "Rick Hendrick" Dunaway, 122.9 grams. Butch fields the largest multi-car team in SERRA! A shameless promoter of retro racing, Butch sent four chassis to Thunder Road before the race so the locals could get a taste.
John England, 111.1 grams. Another Dunaway renta-racer with a very interesting split pan design.
Raymond "Speedy" Gonzalez, 115.8 grams
Jay Guard, 103.6 grams. Jay's run this same body at all of the SERRA races so far. It used to weigh-in at just over 100 grams, but as he adds more and more tape...
Eddie Lawley, 118.3 grams
Bart Merriman, 132.0 grams. Dunaway stable chassis constructed from an R-Geo F1 center section and R-Geo pans. Worked great, as Bart won his main with it, by almost ten laps over second place.
Bobby Robinson, 117.4 grams
Eddie Rowland, 126.0 grams
Steve Saunders, 127.8 grams. The Can-Am "Best Appearing" concours winner, as voted by the racers themselves. Paint by the very talented Eddie MacDonald in TX, aka Mac on Slotblog.
Steve Harrington, 120.6 grams
Michael Shepard, 114.5 grams
Don Weaver, 116.9 grams

I have no experience with the technique but I recall reading somewhere that spraying unthinned paint through an airbrush at a certain pressure will also produce the effect and was wondering if that's the way Chris did it.

I never tried it thru an airbrush but that is how we do it using full-size equipment. Spray unthinned and vary pressure to get the effect you like. One of my favorites thru an airbrush was the dots and starbursts. Today it is buzz bomb for me. Leave the painting to the pros like Noose, Jairus. etc...
