This is a little newer than my main interest, but I thought it might be worth saving. I am a sucker for "the save"

Hard to tell if the rust is too far gone, but I will let the tumbler do its thing.

Not sure about the time period, late 70s, 80s maybe? Early Wing? Maybe someone can tell me about more about this time period and style of car?

Sorry to offend your eyes, when it shows up I will try and make it :sun_bespectacled:

that does look like a wing car from the 70's. the pans are hinged at the front like a plumber but are not independent, although it might be from a later period class with chassis restrictions. someone soldered down the front axles, so their spring wires are now superfluous ("front tires must touch and roll").

it probably used to have an NCC Group motor in it, likely a 12 or maybe even a 20, which were very popular in my neck of the woods.

I agree with all Speedy mentioned.

There is some nice construction, and some weird, as the back cross member and pin tubes look spaced, too close together.

I'm guessing mid to late 70's, when I wasn't involved in slot cars.

Tony P. might be able to help.

Considering it's age, I would say save it. I love restoring the old cars. So many got trashed, or scavenged for parts. Plus I like driving them, reliving what

racing these cars was like back then.

I'd second Ton's dating of late 70's. From the forward placement of the pin tubes and cross bar I'd guess this chassis was for a high glue/banked track, ditto the non hinged pans.

To clean the rust off I'd recommend an ultrasonic cleaner, they have worked well for me in removing rust; then oil the bearings and the front hinges.

Thanks for the info and encouragement.

You are correct Mike I did not notice the pin tube spacing. May be that was a thing, for a minute?

Steve, I do not see the front axle are soldered down. Are you looking at the diagonal cross braces? They move together like an A arm.

Thanks Tony, I will look for a suitable body. Got any suggestions?

Lancer Porsche would be a good choice.

For later 70s o/s Ferrari with big air dams. Circa 1976.

The front tires sort of look like they are soldered down, because of the wires below them, again, sort of, look like they have solder on them.

They also appear to possibly have a short piece of tubing on them.

Anyway, I think they are just down stop limiters.

All that complicated hinged front tires and axles started to go away, when I came up with, and started popularizing perimeter chassis, in '83 and '84.

By '85 or '86, just about all front tires were an afterthought, flopping around on pins, just trying to stay out of the way.

i think you're right, Mike: after a second look, i agree that the diagonal bars that the front axles are soldered to do in fact look like they rotate with the axles rather than being soldered down to the chassis. so i sit corrected, and take that part back.

that doesn't really affect the period or desirability, though- it was just an (incorrect) observation.

As soon as it shows up I will see if I can get the hinges to rotate. Any tricks other than soaking in WD40? vinegar? or?

for hinges with steel parts, i use a real penetrating oil like Liquid Wrench or Blaster from an auto parts store. WD-40 isn't much more than just light oil and lanolin.

Chassis is going to need a good hard scrubbing with a braid brush to start with.

Estimated delivery Monday, Aug 24, 2020 - Tuesday, Sep 8, 2020

That seems like a long shipping time, anybody else notice USPS slowing down?

In the mean time I will look for parts.

Sorry Bob I missed your ultrasonic cleaner suggestion. What liquid to you use? I have a small ultrasonic that I have never used.

I think they list conservative times, so people aren't disappointed.

The last two times I've shipped a distributor order to New York, on a Friday, Priority Mail, the receipt said it was estimated to get there on Tuesday, but both times it arrived, on Monday.

That said, I shipped something, recently, to South Carolina,Priority Mail.

It got there in something like eight days.

Sorry Bob I missed your ultrasonic cleaner suggestion. What liquid to you use? I have a small ultrasonic that I have never used.

My wife has a home jewelry cleaner (second hand) she uses to clean her calligraphy pens.

When I use it I just use water.

When I had access to an industrial grade ultrasonic I would use a cleaning solvent (Naphtha, Freon, etc) if you have a good one you can take rust off a bumper hitch.

CAUTION: the energy of the ultrasonic can heat the object to a noticeable degree. We had a salesman drop his wristwatch in the cleaner to get the dirt off, When he took it out he slapped it on his wrist and cussed out the burn he got from it.

When you get the rust off, remember you will have stripped all the oil as well so immediately oil the bearings and hinges.

Good luck it looks like a fun project.

I talked to my local route carrier Wednesday, since I am waiting for a package promised July 27 and have yet to receive it. He said some deliveries are way behind. I could accept if they were delayed due to the storms in this area, but the package was due long before that. Also last month, I had a package sent with insurance and a tracking number. The tracking showed the package was on the local route truck for 9 days. Over the last five or more years, I regularly get someone else's mail and have to deliver it myself. And if I leave it taped to my mailbox, with a note to please deliver to the right address, the carrier just leaves it. And I am always missing bills. I end up downloading a duplicate off the biller's website. There is a lot of worry about the "vote by mail" option. Most people don't think the USPS can handle the volume.

Cool design, glad you snagged it. Hope it comes out shiny. If you use a tumbler make sure you rinse the media for 2 days  :laugh2:

My experience here is, USPS has been only slightly slowed down, but not much.

That looks like a guy who sits on it for a while before shipping, not due to a USPS problem.

I ordered something from the UK a month ago and it's not here yet. Probably sitting in customs, dead in the water.

Again, I highly doubt it's a USPS problem. USA still has the best mail system in the world

I am waiting for an Australian epay shipment going on two months.  Rumour is that the cargo planes that carry the mail over the ocean are few and far between.....   Some of the Postal distribution centers are short handed due to corona illness, too.

What is strange to me is the Bite bar? ahead of the motor runs through a small tube in the middle of the drop arm.

So there can be no side pan movement even though the hinge at the front is free?

May be just a little rattle when I remove the rust.

Anybody ever try vinegar to remove rust?

Front A arms are free as are the wheels.
