I want to build a custom armature that will basically be just like a Pro-Slot Big Dog (same wire specs and timing) but have a much longer armature shaft. So I talked to John at Pro-Slot and he told me that they don't sell the components to make your own arm. So my questions are these:

1. Is there a supplier where I can buy the raw components for building such an arm? Basically what I'd need are JK Hawk and or Pro-Slot Euro spec parts for my stack. Eventually I'll need the com components as too.

2. If the answer to 1 is no, I have a couple of unused PS-FK arms that hopefully I can use as donors. Is there some kind of stripper than can be used to both remove the powder coating and to break the epoxy bonding them together?

These both are probably pretty dumb questions but its my first foray into motor building.

thanks,

Larry

It would be a whole lot easier, and cheaper in the long run to have ProSlot build you the arm.

Methylene chloride paint stripper will remove the epoxy and powder coat...

Dennis, I checked their site and while Pro-Slot does offer lots of refurbishing services, they don't build custom arms. But you're right in that it would save me a lot of effort if they did.

Thanks Geary, that's exactly the information I needed!

You may have problems finding metheline chloride in California - think it may be illegal or highly restricted there.

If you want a longer shaft, why not extend a scrapped salvaged with a pinion?

Chris, people use pinions for shaft connectors, but they don't provide the straightness Larry desires. Using .078 piano wire doesn't either.  If a .078 bell hanger drill bit was available, it might work.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys ... much appreciated! I've already purchased some 2mm axles that seem to work perfectly so procuring the shaft is not a problem. I'm having fun with this so I think I would like to make my own stack just to see if I can do it. Bill, I'll check with Bill Bugenis and see if he can get me the parts as that would be the easiest way. But once I finish the stack, I probably will hand it off to a veteran motor builder to finish the job. I have one John Havlicek motor already that is a total work of art!

Does anyone have a link regarding how to make your own stack? I seem to recall having seen one at one time but searched around and was unable to find it.

Larry, somewhere in John Havlicek's two lengthy motor building threads on here, he showed photos of himself assembling a stack. He probably included a write-up too.

You may have problems finding metheline chloride in California - think it may be illegal or highly restricted there.

Finding "meth" (NO! Not that kind!) is becoming a problem anywhere as time goes on. in 2019 the US EPA banned all consumer products using MC (or otherwise known as Dichloromethane), even imported products. Industrial uses aren't affected so if you can score some from a buddy you're good.

https://www.homedepo...PR500/308267695 Jasco works on magnet epoxy, I don't think it will remove Hysol or whatever they call it these days. Wear protective gloves and goggles if you are a young fella, if you are an old racer it's too late.

Oh, those two buck mabuchi motors on ebay make great lamination and magnet donors.

This turned out to be amazingly easy! I had a an old PS-4001 armature with no balance holes drilled and it turns out that my beefy drill press works great as a standard press too. With a bit of effort, I was able to push the old armature shaft out of the stack. The best part is that the powder coating held the entire stack together as a unit. I then used a 2mm shaft coupler to hold my new longer armature shaft in position as I pressed the stack down onto its new home. Even after all that, the stack still had a very snug fit on the new shaft but I liberally coated both the stack hole and the armature stack with J-B Weld just to be sure.

Thanks everyone for all your comments and suggestions. Onward!

Looks good Larry! Where did you find that long arm shaft? Was it something sold for 2mm axles? I forgot those are now popular in some eurosport cars.

Yup, it's a 2mm build axle which I bought from PCH for $3.50. It's dead straight and the perfect size.

Be very careful if you have to shorten it any. Measure twice, cut once, unless you have one of those carpenter's board stretchers.

P. S. I would have purchased two of them, for a "just-in-case" I needed a spare.. Have fun with your build Larry.  :)

as Felix Bellman of Bellman Auto Supply in Red Bank, NJ once said when my dad and i brought back a fanbelt for my '66 mustang that was too short, "Just rub on it- it'll get longer."
