Can-Am on the Royal – 8/25/20

This week the schedule at MVH had Can-Am cars on the American Model Raceways’ 95’ Royal. We don’t run Can-Am on the Royal that often, so I thought I’d sift through the archives to confirm the last time we did, and, amazingly (as far as I can tell), it was in April of 2015! A somewhat larger than usual field of nine racers geared down and reacquainted themselves with the Royal's short straights and tight turns.

Running all eight lanes wouldn’t have left any marshals and running the middle six would have been a stretch, so the race was run in 4/4 format with four marshals and one racer to run the computer in a total of 16 heats.

Ray Lee, Nate Bemis and Bob “Woody” Hazelwood were all dialed-in and opened an early lead on the rest of the field. By the time racing moved to the inside lanes, Ray had logged 176 laps to Nate’s 174 and Woody’s 171. Eight laps back, Lenjet HO regular Cody Pare was running 4th while his dad Rick (also an HO racer) and Rob Hayes (one more HO guy!) were in a dead heat for 5th with 157 laps each. Tom Smith and Richard Payne were in another tight race with Tom leading 151 laps to 150. Chris Cassidy finished out the field with 146 laps.

The race for the podium stayed close but the order didn’t change as Ray took the win by 4 laps while 2nd place finisher Nate maintained his 4-lap lead over Woody. There was an 18-lap gap to Cody who held on to 4th place. Rob ended up winning the duel with Rick to take 5th place while Richard had a good second half and to get by Tom and claim 7th.

All three podium finishers posted laps in the 3.8s, with Nate posting the fastest lap at 3.83599 to Woody’s 3.83609 (if you round those lap times to 3-digits they both come out to 3.836!). Blue was clearly the fast way around the Royal tonight as seven of the nine cars posted their best time on the blue lane.

Finishing order, laps completed, best-lap time and best-lap lane:

  1. Ray Lee                       351/17    3.851    BL
  2. Nate Bemis                 347/17    3.836    BL
  3. Woody Hazelwood      344/19    3.836    BL
  4. Cody Pare                   326/25    3.945    BL
