Report by Tom Spellcheck
9 racers in the house for Tuesday night hardbody racing on the Jersey Devil, 5 in the B Main, 4 in the A Main.
We welcomed Don Perry as our new race director.
The B Main was all Steve Russo, who ran the fastest times on every lane and led from the second heat through to the finish, 4 laps ahead of Rodger Airey who finished 2nd. Rodger was about a lap ahead of Stan Brzezynski in 3rd. Stan ran 2nd for most of the race but had a bad run on Red in the last heat which allowed Rodger to get past. Rodger did the best in the “actual/potential” category, so he was the most consistent. Frank Alivernini got rear-ended bad enough to break a body mounting pin off, so he ran most of the race with the body rubbing the tire and came in 4th. Rookie Larry Ballard improved on his performance from last week by 9 laps, so he is getting the hang of it. Only 50 laps more per race to make the A Main!
The A Main had Spellcheck in 1st place wire to wire, running the fastest times on all but one lane and finishing six laps ahead of Mike Marciano in 2nd. Tom Varinecz swapped 2nd and 3rd with Mike for part of the race but fell short by just over a lap at the end. Mike Haskins was 4th, running a lap total that would have also put him 4th in the B Main, handicapping notwithstanding. It is hard to find a handicapping system that makes everybody happy. We have to keep working on it.
