In this movie (and book) the world is about to end from nuclear fallout, so a last race was staged.

A commenter says this was filmed at Riverside.

Cheers

Pretty good for a staged race. They busted up a bunch of valuable cars.

When I see old movies that wreck plenty of "vintage" cars, it's obvious they didn't feel they were valuable back then - most likely because they were plentiful at that time.

Unlike today, they are able to make replicas.

Thanks for sharing that video Bill!

Yes, it was hard to watch that 356 roll over off the turn.

it definitely looks like Riverside. I noticed a car spin in what looked like turn 9 which is just before the long straight.

When the winning driver smiled at the end, it reminded me of Stan Laurel (of Laurel & Hardy).

Thinking that was unlikely, I looked it up and discovered it was Fred Astaire.  I would have preferred Stan.  :D

Fred Astaire was at his best as Alistair Mundy.

When I first saw the movie I wondered where they got the fuel for the auto races. I just recently finished reading the book and they kind of explain it but not really by saying nobody knows where the racing clubs get their petrol from.

The race was filmed at both Riverside and on the Phillip Island race circuit in Melbourne Australia..
