I am new to this forum after an absence from the hobby for several years. I acquired what I believe to be the RTR version of the Cox 2E, as seen in the attached photo.

cox rtr chaparral 2e.jpg

I know that the car is missing all the snap in parts. I am interested in running it on my home track. The motor and gears are in working order but the rear tires don't grip.

Do any of you run your 2Es? If so, what do you use for tires? Looking for advice.

A pair of those wheels and tires actually just popped up on Ebay! These were trued and glued. As far as I know this is for the Cox Iso chassis. They came in a little plastic tube and they should be pretty soft. Here is the link-https://www.ebay.com...DEAAOSwx~dfg42p

You got pretty lucky with the timing!

or you could get the taper hub mag wheels for the Chapparell and the nice aftermarket urethane tire that fit them, since it looks like you have the taperloc axles already.

For home use you are better to get some urethanes.   Paul Gage probably makes that size and slotcartyres in Fr. probably makes them.

That's nice clean, new looking car, too bad the trim  is/was gone.    Lot of them around, but mostly skuffed up.  That one looks like new.

Any of the tapered hubs will work.   You could do as Larry says and get a pair of Chap wheels.  Guys definitely make that size tire in urethane.    You may want to sand/cut them down a little, but  getting a pair of tapered Chap wheels  is a good option.

I neglected to mention my home track is Carrera. I may have some Cox Chaparral wheels stashed away. Urethanes work best on most of my other cars. Good to know they are made for this size wheel.

I took a quick look at removing the body from the chassis and it wasn't obvious how to get the tabs out of the slots without damage. Suggestions?

Do them one at a time and push the  mount to the center of the body.

I run my 2E on an Engelman track with Magna-Traction braid and I use Pro-Track Silicone coated Foamies.

Always worth checking  here.   Tires are molded in an enclosed mold with rounded sidewalls front and back.   Traction is fine.

I'm very sad to report that Bruno, the owner of slotcarstyres, passed away last week. I just heard this news from a friend here who deals with him a lot, and he received an email from Bruno's wife, informing him that she wasn't sure what she would be doing with all the stock, molds, etc.

He was a good guy to deal with.   I've bought quite a few tires from him.   He did a great job and the tires were finished on both sides.   Hope he went peacefully.

I found these Cox Chaparral wheels in my parts drawer. The catalog numbers are 14014 and 14043, as best I can tell for the latter. I think they will work on the RTR 2E I have, correct?

Nope, those would be the wheels for the magnesium chassis Chaparrals, not the RTR, which has an iso-fulcrum chassis (IFC) and smaller wheels without the Chappy pattern.

Don - I want to replace the wheels that came with the RTR. The rear axle is tapered and the 14014 wheel fits the axle, with additional spacers. The stock front wheels are free turning. I have not tried the 14043 wheels to see if they fit yet.

Bob, do you have a photo of the car? If it's the 2E RTR I'm thinking of, these wheels would be way too big for the chassis...

A photo of the car is at the top of this thread. Here is the underside. The mag rear wheel is narrower than the stock wheel with the foam tire.

Yep, that's what I thought; you could always use the cast magnesium wheels you show, but the ground clearance would be kind of high, unless you really cut down the tires. I tried that on a Dinoracha, to have better looking wheels, but they weren't really designed for that car and it still sat kind of high...

Thanks for the confirmation on the wheels Don. I intend to experiment. As is, the foam tires are not usable on my Carrera track. I hope to find some combination of wheels and tires to make the car fun to drive here at home.

Bob,

Paul Gage up in Canada makes tires for this car (paulgg on ebay), in white and maybe other colors; they hook up real well on home tracks - but that means cutting the spongies off of course, or finding another pair of wheels.

Hi Bob, a couple of options,............

1/ If you are not concerned about trashing the original tires (for posterity/originality) , you could strip the tires, and replace with some Paul Gage urethanes.....he makes these (in black) to fit the "Cuc" wheels, which are identical to those on your 2E.

These will grip well on your Carrera track, and will last ages. These will work best if glued and trued on your existing wheels.......they are easy to find/order on his website.

2/ You could buy some silicone coated sponge "Pro Track" tires (mounted on wheels) for 1/8th axles. (Professor Motor and others carry these in both .820 and .815 diameters). You will  however need to buy a 1/8th drill blank axle for this option, and replace the "taper lok".

These will also grip well on Carrera track, and as they are already trued, they will be "bolt on" (other than replacing the axle).

The silicone coated sponge are softer and have more compression than the urethanes, and will offer more compliant handling than harder urethanes.

Cheers

Chris Walker

My experiment with mag wheels and normal size tires was a dismal failure. The tires were so close to the chassis that they rubbed on certain turns. The car stalled for no apparent reason in a few straight segments as well. Cutting down the OD of the tires on the mag wheels to the size of the stock wheels and tires would be quite a chore, and they would look odd as well. Since I want to keep the stock rears for resale purposes, I am looking for another set of 2E/Cuc rear wheels.

I went with the mag wheels on my RTR for a better look and cut down  foam donuts.  All the snap in trim came in a separate pack  when sold originally
