I found this FT16 motor in my motor bin. It appeared to me to have never been used, as there was no evidence of soldering on the tabs. I thought at first that it was a Revell because of the gray can, but the end bell is black and has a different brush configuration than other Revell FT16 motors that I have. The tabs have no hole or notch for wires. I installed it in a Revell XKE yesterday and it runs well.

What do I have here?

Bob, does this motor have a blind bushing in the can? Cobra used to sell a stock Mabuchi with a black endbell & gray can. The one I found a photo of seems a darker gray than yours.

Here is the can side of the motor and a side by side shot with a Revell motor. The can color is pretty close.

Looks like it could be your basic Revell with the usual rusty arm. Most likely had the endbell replaced. On the early 16D motors the brush hood was riveted to the bell. If the lead wire tab broke off you could not replace it. You either had to solder the wire to the hood or replace the bell. Perhaps that's what happened here.

Of course as always, I could be totally wrong.

Hmm, I've got one in a car. Forgot what it was, but according to my list, it's the Cobra 16D - same endbell, same rusty arm!

Not sure where Cobra sourced these from. Maybe some old Revell stock with new endbells, or ??

Don, it was your packaged Cobra motor that I found posted on Steve Okeef's can identifier.subforum.

I notice in Bob's side-by-side photo in post #3, the gray Revell can on the right is considerably shorter that the other.one. I thought all blind bearing cans were the same length. This doesn't appear to be a case of parallax.

Ah, forgot all about that Bill!

Pretty sure they're the same size, and it's just the angle or parallax; 16Ds are pretty standard except for a few odd ones like the Eldon shorty can.

The two motors in my photo are exactly the same size. The phone camera exaggerates the perspective. The XKE is tipped a bit.

Are the brushes in contact with the end bell or are there 360 degree brush holders?

It's got the brush holders/heat sinks.
