Coupes on the Figure 8 – 12/22/20
It was three nights before Christmas and all through MVH…a field of four took to the Figure 8 to run retro Coupes. With the ultra-thin (in numbers) field, racing was in the 4/4 format with two racers on the track and two marshalling each heat.
The limited field of four cars made the odds of finishing on the podium quite good. What needed to be determined was finishing order. By the midpoint of the race it looked like Bob “Woody” Hazelwood was going to run away from the rest of the field, posting 212 laps and good for an 11-lap lead over second place Peter Lentros. Richard Payne was running third, just 3 laps off Peter’s pace, while Tom Stickney closed out the field.
Peter closed the gap to Woody in the second half of the race but, in spite of posting the fastest time of the evening, still trailed by 10 laps when time ran out as Woody claimed the win. Richard Payne was able to carve a lap our of Peter’s lead on the inside lanes but still finished 3rd.
Fastest time of the evening was Peter’s 3.140. All three podium finishers posted their fastest lap on green.
Finishing order, laps completed, best-lap time and best-lap lane
1) Woody Hazelwood 420/0 3.179 GN
2) Peter Lentros 410/10 3.140 GN
3) Richard Payne 408/14 3.234 GN
4) Tom Stickney 356/15 3.343 YL
