Back in the day of cast metal gears I used to use toothpaste to lap gears but it did not work as well has automotive lapping compound, in a pinch though it produced some quiet meshes. Of course if you recall in those days you pretty much had to mate a motor to a gear set due to motors spinning faster in one direction than the other, a problem solved by rewinding and setting your own timing.

The only gears I recall lapping in were the Faas bronze spurs. Those, we ran on a low voltage for 20 or 30 min. lubricated with Lubriplate white grease. If needed today, I might use a combination of oil & scouring powder on metal gears or heat on plastic. I'll have to check Ernie's chart to see how my Crest is rated.

When I was still on the tools we called that lapping compound!
