After a long a grueling day with help from Aaron (some of you will remember him from the San Diego Co Fair) most sidewalls are up. I used 1/2" MDF and some 1/4" MDF (two piece - one on top of one=laminated). I have three areas that will require four pieces of 1/8" plywood (inside the bank and turn under bank; lead-in to donut - oh ,that's gonna be fun).

I use a jig on Skilsaw to cut down sidewalls and have done so on the top but have not yet cut bottoms off.

Looks great, Bob! I hope you're still in business when it comes time for MY four-lane home track (unfortunately, years away).

WOW - that baby's lookin AWESOME, Bob!!! It's a miniature Hillclimb to die for!!

I'd love to have your experience in a few weeks. Once my son closes on his new house, I'll have my garage back!! Plus, I'll have space to put some of my hotrods, so the garage can be used for slottrack!!

I'll be ready to start building in Oct.

Man, Oscar, one of these days you'll actually pay attention - no wife, three-car garage, one bay for workshop on slot cars and R/C airplanes!

The home track is for 1/32 plastic cars, Scalextric, Fly, Ninco, Revell, etc.! It's for the truly SCALE racing! I'll keep my 1/24 stuff at BPR - per your suggestion!!

But I love to race the little 1/32 scale stuff too! Dennis Samson will have a track soon in Irvine, with mine in So OC, we should be able to get some small club racing going on down here!! There's lot's of 1/32 guys out there, we just need to tap into them. Then perhaps we can get some to "cross-over" into D3!!

FWIW,

Tim

Bob, nice track, will the cars run CCW?

I look forward to your first test drive impressions. The left side with bigger radius turns, the right side a bit more technical.

You are going to have a very busy fall with your grand opening. I was in Ventura Saturday, next time I'll need to bring my pit box. :)

If you'd like to reschedule the SD Hillclimb re-braid and re-stripe, no sweat.

BTW is the Eliminator back up and running?

Man, this thing is looking really sweet. Should be one fast technical track. Can't wait to give it a shot!

Bob,

Very nice work indeed! I'm impressed.

I do have a question. What thickness MDF do you use for the track surface? I'm assuming 3/4 inch?

I've seen specs on all the other MDF pieces, just have not spotted the track surface one. You probably have put it in, I have probably missed it.

Thanks.

Thank you!

Surface is standard 1/2" MDF. If I were to do a track for 1/32 or 1/43 scale I would use 3/8" surface.

I have seen a lot of overbuild for slot car tracks. The structure is what gives the track its support and especially the sidewalls. It's hard to believe but the banked turns shape is held in place totally by the the sidewalls.

And, after all a slot car track is just a roadbed with walls. :)

(Sistine Chapel, circa whatever, Anno Domini)

Bob, I've not even seen the thing yet but Steve tells me about the progress every day at work and I know it will be another "masterpiece" and as Steve said, he wanted a Bob Scott Original... I can't wait til Saturday to race on it!

I know your need to get to Shannon's for the braid repair and then home to your family but man we will miss you around here.

We may not be true "SoCal buddies" but we are grateful for all you have done for slot racing here in the dusty wasteland.

So much so that I think it's time to nominate you for John Ford's Slot Car Hall of Fame! (if he has not already put you in it).

What do you CA and AZ guys think?

Sounds like a good idea. Bob's doing a lot to promote slot racing - building tracks as well as setting up tracks at various venues for more public exposure, and hopefully increasing interest in the hobby, all good stuff. :)

Yeah, how many routed home tracks have you built, Bob?

Bob builds routed tracks as fast as Joe Chevy builds D3 cars. ;)

OK lets keep the track photo momentum going, time for the proud owners to post some photos.

One day away, we might miss the striping and braid day or, god forbid, the photos of the first test day! :D

Dave,

I'm truly honored by your favor. I'm very lucky to have very good slot racing friends in both Sunny California and Sunnier Arizona :D

And while I always complain about the heat in AZ, having stayed with Steve and his lovely Sheila in South Chandler under the most hospitable conditions, it's definitely the COOL spot of AZ!

If I didn't have a store to open when I get home, I'd be back here for Saturday's Cherry Hill break-in race. Am looking very much forward to reports and photos!

Steve Hill's track is #80 since 1996. Most have been relatively small but each has been unique ;)

Now all ya needs is an HO track, too, and you'll have all the slot bases covered. They take a lot less room, too.

Just think, you could have a decathalon of slots at yer own place... :laugh2:

Well I tried but as you can see from the email copied in below I have not been paying close attention to John's Hall of Fame and did not realize it was era specific. We can still hope that John can do a Volume Two.... We need a Historian.

The hall of fame is primarily designed for people in our industry from the '60s who had a major part in our existence today. Bob certainly is an important person today, but perhaps should go into a volume 2 along with many other industry leaders of today.

John,

I think it's time that someone nominates Bob Scott of Cruzin' Slot Car Racing to your Hall of Fame if he is not already there.

Bob has been racing since the '60s and has had several raceways in California and Arizona and has also operated mobile tracks at fairs all over the west. Bob also hosted the 2005 "Convention" here in AZ in a raceway with 10 tracks sometimes running at the same time. Bob has been building commercial and home routed tracks for some time now and has just completed a 80+ foot Hillclimb for Steve Hill that fits in his "family room"!

Bob's contribution to the sport here in AZ and on the left coast has been huge, there is no telling how many kids and big kids he has inspired to join us in this silly sport we all love.

And he's one of the nicest/friendliest guy in slots, too... I've know Bob since the '90s with 1/24 and HOs, too. Always a good guy to race with or against. He'd get my vote.
