This build went quicker than expected. Tried to build off of the Jan. '67 Model Car and Racing Pittcan Chaparral plans but it kinda turned into something very different as I went along. The body I chose required some extensive fender flaring and that made it look a bit weird but it turned out mostly okay. I wanted a very period correct chassis with rough soldering. On my newly-bought dyno  :) it sounds pretty fast, the aluminum Weldun is very smooth.

I moved the rear axle up for a "hypoid" arrangment to lower the C of G. The motor is also at a slight downward angle as in the article. I really like the Ulrich axle; just solder right to it and clean, very easy.

The chassis, & the car in general, look fine Isaac. Congrats on a great build!  :good:  :good: Did you flare the rear wheelwells with a warm spoon?

I once used a 16D can to form a crown gear brace on an inline. Sometimes you have to use whatever you have at hand. My sockets were down cellar that time.

Very cool Isaac.   :good:

The style reminds me of a Mike Morrissey article in Car Model Magazine. Have you seen it?

Of course, the Morrissey car is in-line. But it lightly follows the "bridge" style construction that many builders were using. I built this one in '64. Notice the use of square nuts for the rear axle uprights. These had the threads reamed out to take home made oilite bushings.

This was an early sidewinder version I did a little earlier using a Kemtron motor;

Nice rendition of a period car, Isaac.

Thanks, the style is very similar. It's a great article and I bet I have it in the 168 magazines I bought, I haven't gotten to it yet though. So far, the magazines have been amazing and I've learned a lot.

That's is one of the first (if not THE first) Pro car how-to article. If you ever get the bug to build it and need some of the parts PM me.  :victory:

That was is probably the first I have seen, before that it was just race reports and a few pictures here and there. I'm thinking of doing a pro plate car I saw in Model Car and Track eventually, I'll make it nice and spiffy too.

Forgot to thank Paul Menkens for the motor, thanks!

You're very welcome! It looks a lot better then it did when I had it and I'm happy to see it being put to good use rather then sitting in my old motor box.

Car Model, April 66 - and yes it was the first "pro style" chassis building article, at least in the jaildoor mode... earlier articles had covered a lot of different chassis styles, but since there was no "pro" racing, they weren't labeled as such. I know I used it as a model when I built my first scratchbuilt car in early 67, with a 26D inline...

I remember that article in Model Car & Racing Isaac; have always intended to do one that's similar but never got around to it. I think they featured a few cars with that kind of chassis, including one with a RamBoochie.

Yes, there were a few that were very similar including one that actually was a 26D sidewinder.
