Formula 1 on the King – 4/20/21
F-1 returned to the Gerding King this week for some 4-20 MVH Tuesday night retro racing action. A larger-than-usual field of nine drivers ran 18 heats in the 4/4 format for an extensive night of racing.
F-1 Tech:
Ray Lee returned from his annual migration to Florida to help boost the size of the field. In addition, he was able to show the regulars how it is done. Though not the fastest car on the track, Ray jumped out to an early lead, sporting a two-lap lead (163-161) over Bob “Woody” Hazelwood at the move to the inside lanes. John Weaver was running a lap behind Woody and two laps up on Dave Panich in the hunt for a podium finish. Six laps back, Peter Lentros (152), Rob Hayes (151) and Dan Savage (150) were in a mid-field battle for “best of the rest”.
As racing on the inside lanes progressed Woody was able to get close enough to Ray to make the race interesting but not enough to catch him as Ray hung on for the win. Dave couldn’t close the gap to Weaver who took the 3rd step on the podium. A dozen laps back Peter held onto fifth place while Dan got around Rob to take 6th. Richard Payne and Tom Smith closed out the field.
Woody posted the fastest lap of the evening with a 4.280 with Ray right behind him at 4.289.
Finishing order, laps completed, best lap time, best lap lane:
- Ray Lee 321/31 4.289 OR
- Woody Hazelwood 321/14 4.280 GN
