2020 was pretty much a write off for the Tribe. We ran weekly races up to the shut downs and then we pretty much stopped racing, later in November we thought we would try to run the annual Black Friday race and then Arizona decided to top the U.S. charts in new cases and deaths so we decided to hold off.

Lucky that! One of the guys and most of his family got infected that week, thankfully they all survived.

Fast Forward to April 17th 2021 and most of the core group has gotten through the vaccination process and it was time to line em up even if tax day is in May again.

After setting up the 24' X 48' tent and all 5 track sections we got down to some donuts, test and tune and handing out the new AZGR shirts.

What length sleeve Rick?.jpg

We decided to run some cars we bought the year before first so first up was Pioneer Legends.

And it didn't go well. Spun spur gears, wobbly wheels and some rookie mistakes made it pretty funny... After the first heat we realized Steve was Rick and Rick was Steve.

The real Steve racing as Rick won with 77, Steel Brian finished 2nd with 75 and KC Kennedy finished third with 75 (-5 seconds)

Next was NSR 86/89 Formula 1

NSRScreen Shot 2021-04-21 at 5.32.42 PM.png

If Legends were the least exciting these were the stars of the day. Stock except for some paint jobs they were fast enough to be fun and smooth enough to be easy to drive. This will be a regular class.

The Real Rick Schonfeld won this one with 107, Stan Ferris was right behind with 106 and KC Kennedy third with 104.

Seven drivers who have never raced these cars finished with a spread of seven laps, not bad for a new car on rubber tires.

Time for a break but I'll be back , there are more races to talk about...

Our H&R based GT race was actually second... Rookie Reporter!

It was fun and fast as always!

H&R.png

Steel was the big Winner with 117 over Rapid Rick on the same lap by less than 20 seconds with me trailing way back in third with 113.

The 4th Race was Scaleracing 1/24th Trans Am IROC.

This was right after Mike Pyska arrived and KC who had been fighting his allergies had to go home so we were still in every race for 7 heats.

TA.png

You could say that Rick ran away and hid with 110 while Steve Hill, Stan Ferris and I fought out behind him.

Remember that big tent? Here it is after Mother Nature blew it down again! Stuffed in my garden shed!

To be Continued

The fifth race was Scaleauto 1/24th GT and Steve, now racing under his given name had a fierce battle with Rick winning by less than 7 seconds, each with 112.

I managed to hold off the rest of the wolves with a 109.

SA .png

Prior to this race Lee Bumbalow had to boogie back up the hills to Payson but he left a nice prize for Scaleauto.

Applebees.png

The final race of the day was Thunderslot Can Am.

TS.png

Mr. Steve was not to be denied we ran our Elvas hard but in the end I think it was his custom paint job that got him home first with 110, I had 109

and Steel got Stan by seconds!

A great day of racing!!!

We tore down the tent frames and the track and pack 500 lbs. of stuff in the space of 50 lbs. and the guys headed of into the sunset.

Thank to everyone for helping to make this fun as always

After posting this I realized there were some cool thing I forgot to mention. First was a bit of track time with our new ZMR chassis cars. Zack's chassis is solid and the cars stick to the track. Rick and Steve and I got to run ours a bit, Rick seemed to have better balance because he had added a front chassis plate behind the guide flag which I had not done and boy could I tell. He had me on entrance and exit on almost every corner. I'm not sure what Steve 's was doing, he didn't have it on the track very long and as soon as I found out what I needed I pulled mine off. I'll fab a plate and catch up to those guys again and hopefully Lee will get his finished. Here's mine sporting Caveman Bodeez new GTP/DP type body with Indycal's decals for one of Little Al's Indycars.

The other cool car that I got to try out on the big track was my new and newly modified 1/24 Carrera Lola T-70 MkIII. I arrived right after I saw a cool motor / axle carrier from Slotinvasion of Germany. I tried to buy from them but they referred me to Oscar Azevedo here in the States and he provided me a couple to try out to see how they would work. I'm happy to say that they work great! They capture the 30K RMS-124 motor and the axle perfectly with no sloppy gear mesh. I also tried their deep guide and gear puller/press and both are excellent. I think we may start seeing SI parts here at Cincy Slots and possibly other shops soon.

Even on old Indygrip silicones it is now the fastest of my big Carreras.

The chassis in post #5 described as a "ZMR" sure looks like a Scholer chassis, which are no longer marketed in the US.  Are these available somewhere?

James,

These are what I refer to as the 2NASTE chassis.  They look like the Scholer but there are some great differences.  Brass is .062 so no shimming for pans, axle hangers are for 1/8 or 3/32 axles so  no reaming. Hanger hardware is steel not aluminum so it does not bend that easily. I have three of them and they handle just as good as the Scholers. See the link for an article on the chassis by Zack Morgan (my review of the chassis with images is near the end of the comments). The cost is $75 and can be order from Zack (See link for order)

Dave,

Great racing!  Wish I was there with you guys - maybe this winter!!

Rich

BTW below are a few images of the 2NASTE chassis. Last  3 for GT40. First one for 1/20 scale resin of a Cobra Daytona that I am casting. The first one is actually a hybrid.  It is a Scholer with a 2NASTE front end

Hi Rich!  Thanks for answering James and showing us your ZMR chassis. I love the GT40 and it looks like the Daytona will be just as nice. I wish you could have made it to the race but there will be more.

Dave,

Always a pleasure racing with your crew. Your Long Course looks great, especially the squeeze part that may have the impact of making lap times more equal between lanes. Keep up the great work

Hi Rich ....Love the GT40 and it looks like the Daytona will be just as nice. I wish you could have made it to the race but there will be more.

The GT40 runs great.  I also cast a GT40 MKIV and mounted it on a 2NASTE chassis. I don't have an image of the chassis but the wheelbase is almost exactly the same as the GT40.  Here is an image of the two bodies I have set up with the 2NASTE. The Gurney/Foyt car was one of my initial casts.  For the Andretti/McLaren Sebring car (a much later cast), I decided to try to reinforce the body with carbon fiber.  It only added a few grams but I hope that it will improve durability.  I will be testing the Sebring car in race conditions over time.  If the carbon fiber does the trick I will reinforce all of my early casts.

The Daytona has been cast and reinforced. It is a bit heavier and taller than the Mk IV.  I should prime it today and paint tomorrow.  The livery will be Ford France (the car was actually run with this livery in Europe in 65). I will post some images on another thread
