OK, one more question and then I'll quit. Is there a "best" lap counter for a home track routed in MDF? The track is 3 lanes.

I always liked Trackmate in the past. This has options for the number of lanes. You may want to get a few more lanes on the chance you may someday expand. This recommends a 3" dead strip but I have used it with less than 2".

I concur. A bit expensive, but the best there is.

A used DS is an option for lap counting and timing.   Not sophisticated  like  Trackmate and other  computer programs.   Sometimes a complete system is found in Ebay fairly cheap.
