Hard to beat 1940s tech:

I have three of these, one to use and two for parts, which I haven't needed.

When I was a kid, I'll never forget my next door neighbor, Arthur Bickford making his toast. He threw two pieces of bread on the top of the kitchen woodstove & let them smoke for awhile. Then he flipped them over & smoked the second sides. When he was done, his toast looked more like a charcoal briquette than a piece of bread. But that's how he always ate his toast. We had a toaster with a mica insulated nichrome heater & side doors that opened down.  :)

Bread machines were big a few years back. I got my wife one about 15-20 yrs. ago. She use it awhile & then it disappeared. I liked her tomato-basil bread the best, Today, the Panera chain uses tomato-basil bread for some of it's sandwiches.

Following the covid19 lock down last year, we took our bread making machine down from the attic.

Ever since, we have baked one loaf of bread every two days :D

You can't beat home made bread!

My mother used to make bread. I have been putting all her recipes in a file on computer, and I think there must be at least 10 bread recipes. She had a tin box with all her recipes in it, some dating back several centuries. There is an amalgamation of them from both sides of my family. Those from my father's Scottish side go way back. The traditional Scottish scones are nothing at all like the muffins vendors sell at Scottish festivals.

When I was living on the grounds of the National Railroad Museum, I was going with a girl who was a true country farm girl. She also worked at the museum, and stayed with us guys in the Poplar River Pullman sleeper car. To save money, she started cooking breakfast for the two of us in the kitchen of the Silver Pheasant dining car. She would make toast on the propane stove, laying each slice on the iron grid over a burner. She watched each slice like a hawk, and turned it at just the right time using tongs I had previously used for sorting old nuts and washers. It wasn't long before word got around to the other workers, and she ended up cooking breakfast for eight or more people. Three dozen eggs, three loaves of bread and two pounds of bacon, and never uttered a word of complaint. (You're right. I should have married her)
