I'm pretty the winner at the Million wins $10K+.

IIRC, it's $50 a car entry, 10 car limit, so $500 entry fee if you want your best chance of winning.

IIRC, they had about 780 cars last year.

You state $10K+ so I guess it paid more than that. $50 X 780 is $39K. What % should the payout be on race with revenue like that?

I have to back Mike on this. I race in those monthly events, and am in the crowd. I haven't seen any betting between racers, or anyone else. There is a pot that comes out of the entry fees, and it is split among the entrants according to how they podiumed.

Eddie,
I saw a video of the final.

Both red lighted by a fair amount.

They didn't even seem to care.

I wonder if they agree to split the 1-2 money ahead of time.

That happens a lot around here.

Boy, Phil, you are really obsessed that if I have drag racing, I have to have guys betting.

Guys show up and practice with their bracket cars.

Seldom are there 2 cars of the same speed lined up next to each other.

All the guys are friends and are happy trash-tallking each other.

And one more time, if they wanted to, they wouldn't have to he discreet.

I don't have guys drag racing while birthday parties for 6 year olds are going on, and I'm pretty sure I don't have undercover police hanging around.

No winks needed. This is a group who have become close friends, and I have been "inducted" by showing up regularly. They stick to an unspoken set of rules of conduct, which doesn't allow side bets. Being the track owner, some of that might have been hidden from Mike, but I certainly would have seen it as a competitor.

Not sure I like people assuming that all drag racers are bad people. They are not. Not any more than all bikers are gang members. My town started having car shows on Wednesday nights to pump up downtown business. Several of the store owners banded together to block the event, saying that the car culture people would cause a lot of trouble, and feared that their stores would be broken into and looted. These were store owners who normally closed their stores on Wednesday evenings, then complained to the city council and Chamber of Commerce that they had no business on Wednesday nights. Soon, the stores that stayed open began seeing that the car show nights were by far their biggest sales times. But the criers were steadfast, and opposed the car shows at every city council meeting. Those five shop owners filed a lawsuit against the city, claiming safety concerns. The court ruled that the shows could continue, but the city had to double the police presence during them. The city couldn't dedicate 60 percent of the police force to one event, so they shut down the shows. By the way, none of the five complainers are in business anymore. One applied for Covid money to open a new store, but was turned down.

A place I would go to for a beer and a light dinner had a couple of pool tables. There was a "No Gambling" sign adjacent to that area. Money was commonly exchanged after the game was over. I'm sure it was a fee to the winner for "learnin'" them the skills it takes to win.

There is a notion that "road racers" in the racing world are snobs. Many of the posts above do nothing but reinforce that notion. We're all racers. We have more in common than most realize and when bashing, from either side, starts no one wins.

Drag guys bet. Road course guys don't. Cats and dogs. They usually get along, but don't try and mix them. Let the money stay in drags. Keep it away from road and roundy-roundy racers. The system works. I say "don't mess with it".

Drag guys need the money - they show up with 15 cars. Us road course and roundy-roundy guys don't need the money - we show up with one car in a brown bag and if it breaks we fix it.

I don't think anyone has disparaged drag racers. I think y'all are taking what Pablo said the wrong way. He didn't say anything negative about drag racing. Just that the two are different.

Slot drags lends itself to betting because there are fewer variables that can interfere with the outcomes. ie marshals, race director, not having 6 other racers on the track, track conditions, weather, humidity, sun in your eyes.....................

Some of you may remember I have been a serious advocate of paramutual betting on slot car races with a spread for each racer in the race or lap handicaps. After all look what the spread did for the NFL! Observers and betters would keep track of the entrants race histories and the bettors will detrmine the spreads. The house take 5% of the float. Run it online from the Caymans. This writes istelf. People will bet on anything. Hells bells Nels I am still trying to figure out which tribe owns the Wall Street Casino?

Dirty nerfs and there done dirt cheap!

Nelson, great idea! You may have single handedly saved slot cars. Racers could be paid to race, instead of the other way around. I think Japanese motorcycle flat track racing would be a good model to go by.

Van Rosem was not the first guy to put up cars, others including Howie have won cars for races won. Below is a clip of a racer (from Arizona so never got his due) that actually died in his won car.

Over the years, raceways have slowly gotten away from cash payouts, track bucks etc.  Many different factors led to this.  Racers wanting lower entry fees was one of them.  Not fitting a good business model without higher entry fees was another.  The same racers winning and turning over that cash/ track bucks into new faster equipment was one of the biggest reasons while I owned a track.  With Drag Racing it is the Majority of the time Bracket racing for money.  More entries, more money for the racers,  more money for the track owner with bracket racing.  Just different genres of racing and trying to compare racing them for money is like comparing apples to oranges.   Both fruits but different.

Y'all would be singular and all Y'all would be plural, but I am not sure there is a proper English usage.

That's my story and I am sticking to it. Y'all be good now u hear.  :good:

There is a difference in a Pro or to a lesser amount the semi-pro racers of the old days (I used to have both designations depending on which state I was racing in deemed by SoCal USRA President PDL) where payouts were in cash possibly supplemented by donated race prizes. There were many a time where gas money to get back to Arizona came from Dave Fortner and I making the main and finishing in the money. Nothing wrong or immoral about that it was just the way races were conducted back then.

There is or was a hierarchy of racers where the lower class racers were like greasers that inhabited the dirt tracks and frequently would throw blows after a bad race. The upper class pure racers were more refined and would never associate with the guys that went around making bets and acting like thugs.

Each to his own, I'll take road course racing every time.
