I don't think it is quite ready for prime time.
Some financial analysts maintain the real value of Tesla is in the autonomous driving data they have collected to drive artificial intelligence learning routines.

Tesla is an energy company masquerading as a car company. No one really knows how to value it.

Supposedly if all cars were self driving Teslas, accident rates would plummet. Overall they are much better drivers than humans are.
Posted 26 July 2021 - 09:13 AM
Personally I believe the real jump in technology will come with not only driver-less cars, but passenger-less cars as well. With no occupants, the accident rate becomes less of an issue.

The car isn't diddling with a cell phone. But I wonder if they change the speed limit on a road and the car misses the update, gets pulled over for speeding, and the passenger says "I wasn't driving, I have no license"

vehicle gets towed and impounded until an engineering brief is submitted proving corrective action. passenger is accommodated.

The big issue is going to be the AI interface (anyone remember the M247 Sergeant York anti aircraft gun).
The scary time for me is the when we have AI and humans sharing the road. 'I' can spot a cell phone driver but can an AI system pick it out?
In some ways I look forward AI tractor trailers (no over tired drivers, and yes I saw a driver failure on I-80 two cars ahead of me at 6 AM). However the economic impact is just as scary as watching an 18 wheeler turn left into the median.
In the case that is mentioned above when it goes wrong who is going to pay the bill?

driverless 18 wheelers have been an interesting discussion topic. i am not sure where that has gone to date. i suspect insurance companies will be involved with the final plan. best regards

What happens when a foreign country hacks driverless cars and we have 200,000 head on accidents during rush hour with 150,000 dead? Relying totally on smart technology is proving to not be so smart sometimes. I have a flip phone!

We already have driverless cars. There is a human behind the wheel, but they are definitely not driving.
Perhaps the correct term should be "operatorless vehicles", since few people know how to actually "drive".
I am not a doctor, but I played one as a child with the girl next door.

Gosh Matt, that's just crazy talk!! The engineers on here would have told you that everything (sensors, cameras, etc.) down to the last transistor in it is 100% RELIABLE and that the computer system is IMPOSSIBLE to hack (just like everything else in our perfect world).

Domestic terrorist hackers will have a field day. Like the kids who drop rocks off freeway bridges, only with a smart phone app that hacks your smart car.
Technology has ruined sport fishing also. $60,000 boats on a lake, 360 degree sonar, underwater cameras, lines that don't break, people driving boats at 70 MPH who can't back a trailer, etc. Why not just get a gill net and a rowboat?

I Googled "Tesla car hacked" and got a lot of hits. I had never considered that before. Certainly a big problem!
Posted 26 July 2021 - 06:03 PM
Relying on technology to drive your car will get interesting when the "windows" program crashes! Computers are NOT reliable enough-- but of course their going to play with the statistics to say it will be safer than humans driving. You just don't want to be the %1 that are in the car when it fails!!

People should get a mule; They have their own minds, just like some of these driverless cars do. Are surgeon-less surgeries next?
Posted 26 July 2021 - 11:58 PM
The bar for self driving cars is set unreasonably high.Sure they're not going to be perfect, but they'll still be waaay safer than human driven cars.
I'd like to have one if I could afford it.
Posted 27 July 2021 - 04:47 AM
Just imagine half the cars on the road being hacked at rush hour and accelerating to their maximum all at the same instant. Would anyone walk away? As evil as this sounds you know there will be criminal syndicates working away at it. I don't even know if autonomous means entirely offline.
