Coupes on the Figure 8 – 10/19/21
Coupes returned to the Figure 8 for this past Wednesday’s MVH Tuesday evening Retro race. Seven racers ran in the 4/4 format with three marshals on the corners.
Coupes in Tech:
John Weaver jumped out to an early lead as the rest of the field was divided up into three two-car races. By the move to the inside lanes, Bob “Woody” Hazelwood was tied with Dave Panich for second with 219 laps, Gil Aubin and Richard Payne were tied for fourth with 211 laps, and Paul Ryer held a two-lap lead over Dan Savage at 194 to 192. At this point in the competition, Weaver had logged 229 laps, leading all racers by a comfortable margin.
As expected, the ties sorted themselves out in the second half of the race. In the last heat, Woody sealed the deal for 2nd place by posting two more laps than Dave. Gil picked up the pace on the inside lanes and put three laps between himself and Richard to take 4th place while Paul added to his lead over Dan to claim 6th place. Weaver’s 460 laps took the win by a 17-lap margin.
Fast lap on the evening went to John with a 2.961, though Woody was right behind him with a 2.968 second lap.
