my friend gave me this monogram chassis with a old MPC mustang body rigged on it. Been keeping my eyes peeled for a proper body to use and won a auction for a Monogram Porsche 904. looked ok in the pictures but has some problems. just want it to have a body it would have had originally doesnt need to be perfect.

this is my first production car besides my dads cox BRM. Im not a very good modeler and havent built one since I was a kid so Im gonna leave the original molded Silver plastic and try to fill the holes in the sides. then hide the repairs with black paint below the belt line around the whole car and then some numbers.

i already started cleaning up some glue mess to try and fit stuff together.

holes Im going to fill. Ill probably end up using jb weld since Im used to working with that stuff. also some goofball kid radiused the rear fenders a little and for some reason rounded off the corners (which I might try to build out of jb weld?)


and some glue mess. isnt worth trying to fix since I dont have the skill and it adds some charm.

No pressure as it is not mint so you can only make it better, have fun with it.

 

Looks like it might be ready for some fender flares.

 

I made my front end from JB weld and the flares from epoxy with body putty before primer.

Woah nice work! Not gonna lie it crossed my mind to do fender flares!

What did you use for body filler? I know I’m going to need some to make this look decent.

I switched to Tamiya products some time ago. Their putty can be thinned with lacquer thinner.   I even use their grey fine primer. Which minimizes loss of details and wet sands well. A bit pricey so shop around.

Thanks! I was looking at tamiya basic putty I think it was called but wasn’t sure if it was correct to use.

Thanks Ernie, but I am here to help Mark this time.  My posts are out there.  I get stuck on projects so start others if I do not have all the parts needed to complete. 

I still work full time on building 1/1 race cars so time is in short supply.

I’m actually returning to work in next couple days (I work on 1/1 race cars aswell) after being off with a injury so this might get the back burner but I’ll be sure to post lots of pics of the process when I get to it. I ordered some tamiya putty and need to get some jb weld. I have some of the plastic jb weld stuff but don’t really like it.

Cleaned up front body mount real quick with dremel.

This will make fitting the front body mount easy. one was never glued to this body. Can also see the interior is unglued at the front and only held on at the rear. wonder if I should cut it out to detail interior?

Not really sure what to do about the threaded inserts missing. and missing exhaust begging for paint brush feral scratchbuilt megaphones.

I use Napha to loosen old glue, work slow. it will come lose.

 

Yes I think a well detailed interior ads to the finished car.

If you cannot get a headlight cover. My friend John got some fake nails in different sizes and filed them down to fit.

Cleaned and roughed up surface for adhesion.


Not sure if this will work but using some old clay bar I had lying around for dams to build up fender corners.


JB weld added. not sure how it will release from the clay but atleast I know it doesnt like to stick to masking tape. Doing stuff like this I try to add more material than needed because sometimes its easier to sand down than go back and add more filler material.

ok so that did not work as planned. Im using plastic bond jb weld Instead of the regular stuff and Im not sure if it didnt mix correctly but it didnt seem to be curing correctly. so I attempted to pull everything apart and everything was stuck together! Ended up using the uncured jb weld as putty and just used my hands to stick it on. so hopefully it will finish curing and harden.

here's an idea:  there's a very clever HO guy who makes "goop" for things like this. he grinds up extra bits of the original plastic, dissolves them in some liquid plastic cement and then uses that for body filler, etc.  being the same material, you can't even tell.

I thought of doing that. Just don’t have any spare plastic to work with.

Well better than it was so far. Havent ruined it yet. waiting on my body filler to do a skim coat between the fenders and I have some donuts coming to mount on the matching rear wheels. Still need to take out interior at some point to detail and make exhaust. I also have some model kit halibrands Im going to try and make wheel inserts with since I cant find proper Porsche ones. I also have tons of generic donut and number water slide decals Ill be using. this isnt going to be a race car replica but something maybe a kid back in the day would have done.

Revell made nice Porsche 1/24 wheel inserts. They come around frequently.

BTW the wheel arches look O.K. to me, a little big. but kinda scale. Will you add a flare or leave them?
