Coupes on the Figure 8 – 12/14/21
Coupes were back on the Figure 8 this week in MVH’s Tuesday evening retro series. A field of eight racers ran in the 4/4 format with four marshals on the corners.
Eight Coupes on the Tech Table:
Before the race Peter Lentros realized he didn’t have a car, so Ernie “The Ernstigator” Lachance loaned him a back-up car for the evening. When racing got underway, Bob “Woody” Hazelwood took an early lead over Nate “Spudboy” Bemis while Dave Panich’s car sat on the starting line for a lap or two due to an incorrectly connected controller. Once that was sorted out, a poorly timed pass in the banking put him into the wall with the resulting loss of handling costing him a few more laps. By the change to the inside lanes, Woody was leading with Spudboy running in second while Peter and Dave were tied for third.
The second half of the race saw Woody cruise to the win as Nate and Dave battled for second place while Pete lacked the horsepower to make the podium. When time ran out, Dave slipped into second, taking the position by just 3 sections over Nate. Pete settled for fourth while Richard Payne, trailing by seven laps, claimed fifth and The Ernstigator slotted into sixth place. At the back of the pack, Tom Smith and Paul Ryer were in a dead heat, with Tom edging Paul by just one track section to take seventh.
Dave posted the fastest lap on the night with a 2.961 on green, Woody had the second fastest lap with a 3.015 on yellow while the next four finishers (Nate, Pete, Richard and Ernie) all posted identical 3.070 laps on three different lanes. Based on times, it could have been almost anyone’s race.
